Mobile Phone Number & leaving company

One of my friends has been given their p45 today. She's worked at the same company for 12 years and as such has always just used her work mobile for contacts etc. The hrs dept has told her she can't take the number with her .im sure I read somewhere you were entitled to these days

Any advice gratefully received

The number belongs to the company - there's lots of commercial reasons why they wouldn't want the her to keep it aren't there?

She's a graphic designer so I'm not sure what exactly they think they'd stop her from doing by keeping the number....

Starting a graphic design business or joining a competitor and receiving phone calls from their customers perhaps?

If she's asked and they've said no, I don't think there's a lot she can do.

A person or business can transfer a number from one phone provider to another but only if they are the one that has the contract. Your friend's employer almost certainly has the contract and as such it is their phone/number, not hers.
