Hi folks/guys depending on which country you hail from. I need to file VAT returns for a Ltd company and would like to know if anyone can recommend a good but simple software to just enable VAT returns to be submitted. Nothing fancy like Sage etc - just plain vanilla. It could be free or come with a purchase tag. There is a list on the HMRC site of software but would prefer to hear it from the horse's mouth via this forum.

You really do have lots of choice.

I look after accounts and tax for small businesses and most of my clients use Accounts Portal or FreeAgent and both work well depending on the type of business they run and any other requirements they have.

I personally use Accounts Portal for my company VAT returns and its very quick and easy to use (although I am an accountant)

If your accountant uses either they can generally get you a discount on the monthly subscription.

FreeAgent is also free if you bank with RBS, Natwest, Ulster bank or Mettle.

Can't you submit them direct on the HMRC website anymore?

No - can't be done it seems. The option is no longer available.

You dont have to submit a VAT return digitally if your turnover is below £85,000 (although this wont apply from 1 April) and can apply to be exempted from Making Tax Digital for VAT in certain circumstances - the exemptions are detailed in VAT notice 700/22 here - https://www.gov.uk/government/publi...otice-70022-making-tax-digital-for-vat#para-3

Using proper MTD compliant software will save you a lot of time and hassle.
