And as for the money for Magento Enterprise, i think you are buying into their resources and skills on developing a site. You get Indemnification, 'world class' (as they said somewhere on their site) SLA, warranty, plus the other bells and whistles.
At the end of the day people will probably pay to have that piece of mind.

Just my 2 cents

you are bang on. the feature set is only marginally different. Its for corporates, not SMEs.

I give up trying to persuade you of the benefits of Magento, it's obviously not for you.

Got to sign off now, I've got a bunch of Magento projects in my inbox I need to quote on. Damn popular this Magento platform....

Lol you don't know that it's not for me am just firing all of what I think at you and maybe a little awkward on purpose but I'm still open to idea's :p

They will help you develop your website when you buy an Enterprise licence ?

Ps I'm not really asking if people will pay or not as anyone can get duped into paying any silly amount :p
However what I am asking is, Is it worthit in comparison to other similar solutions at the same level that is the question
The reason why it's the question is because we have choices to make and we want the best value for our money :)

Although I do agree I will pay for peace of mind.

I would hope they would help for that sort of annual fee.
And did you know it was annual fee? I didn't until now!

In my eyes you need to best fit the cart for the business needing it.
If your business needs the features Magento Enterprise has to offer then it's a good buy.

Magento's major trick is being able to run multiple stores from a single installation which saves money on licensing, there isn't another product in that price range that has the same feature. If you require this feature, then yes Magento beats other products in a similar price range hands down.

At the end of the day, as we keep repeating, there is no single ecommerce solution that is simply better value for money or better technically than another. They are all different and as sir.chunk has said, you as the business owner needs to decide on which features you require to run your business. This either means paying an ecommerce consultant to analyse your business and suggest a solution to fit (ahem ;) ) or reading through the spec sheets yourself.

No Magento will not design your store for you, they will install, configure and provide ongoing support for the application but you will need a third party to create the theme.

Good point.

I would say if a web development asked me what I needed from my online store / ecommerce website and everything I said resulted in Magento I don't think I'd complain as the developer would be responsible to show me how to make it work for me efficiently for my business.
One such example is the TEXT/CSV uploading while I personally have rarely had to use it due to fast easy product adding through the admin interface.
I guess if the developer showed me that this is the fast efficient way to do it then yes I'd use it because that online store suits my business.

However if i had to open build one myself I don't think I would personally take Magento because it's a lot of work compared to others out there and also it seems kind of bloaty in comparison to others.
I rememeber the first thing I had to do was raise the PHP memory limit to 128m on my localhost :p.

The conclusion so far is that it's a great free solution for developers to offer their clients but I don't know for myself
It seems as though the Oscommerce commerce community is jumping ship because Magento is seen as the best Open Source free solution out there.
It even advertised itself as Open Source Evolved :p.

No you are wrong Interspire and Product cart both have that feature at a fraction of the cost ;)

Magento still not matching up to the other Enterprise solutions out there :p

Ah the Virtual Mall product, I forgot about that, here's some opinions on Interspire http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=108338&highlight=interspire :)

Magento has the flexibility of either sharing or separating the backend product database, AFAIK with Virtual Mall all vendors are separate and the payment gateway is comon amonst vendors (the storefront), with Magento differing payment methods can be used.

Not familiar with Product Cart, whatever you pick I wish you luck. :)

Lol my preference is Jshop this thread is just for discussions sake :p

Btw I see what you saying no other free product has the ability to have multiple stores from one backend and I think I get why Magento is getting the attention now :)

That's just one of its many features, but yes you are right its an awesome feature and really well implemented.

Don't forget its not just multi store, its multi website and multi store. The possibilities are endless. Combined with the easy ability to scale to a server cluster, you could run an entire multifaceted ecommerce empire from a single Magento installation.

How many people reading this thread have suffered the pain of running multiple instances of the same or varying shopping carts. It's a total nightmare.

Imagine a situation where you can run everything from one admin but still have fine grained control over the configuration of each individual store front and web site.

Yes it would take some setting up, but it wouldn't take any custom development. It's a standard vanilla feature.

Then lets talk about the EAV architecture and the total flexibility for a highly customised product catalogue that brings whilst maintaining total upgrade compatiblity.

I could go on and on...

man do you ever log off?

Yeah i do i was just eating lol the question is do u log off ? :p
Was playing Street Fighter before :p.

Also I'm working hard to get the SEO done right on my own store so I tend to work with a break here and there from time I wake up to time I go sleep.

So when I get an email notification it's a welcome distraction from work.
Also I tend to watch a bit of quite a bit of youtube in my spare time.

Also I could ask you the same question. What you doing here at this time ? :p

Magento have just announced a bunch of new features coming q3 for the enterprise edition, mostly centred around targeted marketing/personalisation. Regards the discussion about whether magento enterprise is good value - if you compare it with genuine enterprise level solution vendors (e.g BT Fresca, Hybris, Maginus, IBM websphere commerce) then it's small change compared to the amounts that can be spent using those.

Its actually a big change going from hosted Commerce to Self Hosted.
I would never go to a Hosted solution as I'd lose the control :D
