Magento's major trick is being able to run multiple stores from a single installation which saves money on licensing, there isn't another product in that price range that has the same feature. If you require this feature, then yes Magento beats other products in a similar price range hands down.
At the end of the day, as we keep repeating, there is no single ecommerce solution that is simply better value for money or better technically than another. They are all different and as sir.chunk has said, you as the business owner needs to decide on which features you require to run your business. This either means paying an ecommerce consultant to analyse your business and suggest a solution to fit (ahem

) or reading through the spec sheets yourself.
No Magento will not design your store for you, they will install, configure and provide ongoing support for the application but you will need a third party to create the theme.
