Low volume credit card processing

Currently, I am using Streamline with Secure Trading. This was fine in the past when I had a fair few transactions, but since my volume is only about $100 to $200 per month, it is getting rather costly.

Secure Trading charge me about £250+vat per year (annual fee) and min £10 transaction costs per month.

Streamline have recently upped my min payment from £15 to £30 per month.

What to do? Are there any cheap solutions for those of us who do only a small amount of online credit card processing?

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon,

Most acquiring banks will charge a minimum monthly cost. On average this is £20-£25 for our merchants but it is only charged if you do not process that amount in % charges each month.

We could provide you with a low-cost monthly service ideal for low-volume merchants but you would still need a merchant account for the acquiring. Our service works with merchant accounts from Barclays, HSBC or Streamline.

Drop me a PM or click the link in my signature to find out more.

Thanks,

Simon

Hi,
You could try a 3rd party payment processor such as AlertPay. A 3rd party processor allows you to scale your operations up or down based on your needs. If you need more info PM me or check out the website: Alertpay.com

No, not technically, though it makes things quicker - PayPal will allow your customer to pay using a debit/credit card without having an account, however they will not give you the protection they offer against fraud as they cannot verify the customer....technically they can, but they like to get everyone signed up and verified!

They also allow them to set account sup and send echeques (very long winded, takes days to clear) prior to them being verified.

There are also services like Nochex, not used them but you don't need a merchant account in order to do so.

Whenever I tried to pay using Paypal in the past, I couldn't find an option to pay without using my credit card via my paypal account. :S Maybe they set things up so that it tries to sign them up?

Is the disadvantage with paypal that they take a higher percentage or something, or just the fraud thing?

Is Paypal pro what I would need?

Hi Jon,

Paypal is fine if you have low transaction volumes. If you are processing a higher amount and considering looking at Paypal Pro you'd be better to shop around and go for a merchant account/payment gateway as you can get far more competitive deals. We provide the payment gateway and can assist in the application for a merchant account.

Regards,

Marc.

If you are worried about customers not having PayPal, you could consider a Mobile Payment option. MobilePOS is an application for 90% of mobile phones that enables you to accept card payments through your mobile phone. There are also Android and iPhone applications to make accepting cards that bit easier. Hope you like the look of our product offering. http://www.adelante.co.uk/mobilepos.html

Retail Merchant Services

Some low transacting businesses, particularly those in genuinely seasonal trades such as; seaside hotels, B&Bs, Christmas tree sellers, sports photographers and angling shops, you might be able to negotiate a reduced minimum monthly fee with your provider and some providers can in some circumstances waive the fee altogether or seasonal businesses that have a complete closedown period.

It's worth asking, whoever you're with at the moment ... or even us :).

All the companies that provide credit card facility have their different fee structures. If you want to get a less expensive company service ,you can look over the internet for companies that deals in ecommerce credit card processing services.

We previously used to use pay pal,. very low fees on a monthly basis albeit a little steep on transaction by transaction basis as they charge the same for debit card transactions as they do for credit card so weigh up the options

For a low-volume credit card processor, it is a good idea to focus on lowering fixed costs for your merchant account. Basically, focus on lowering the set-up and monthly fees for your credit card service. At this low volume, these fees can significantly boost your effective discount rate.
