A bit of a long winded post. I have lost the government gateway ID and password for my small ecom wholesale business. I think it was stored on my laptop which just happened to get broken due to my partner spilling coke on it !

Looking at the HMRC website it states that you can request a new gateway ID if you have access to the email that was used to setup the account. The problem is, the person who has access to this email is not returning my calls and so I do not have access to the email account that was used to setup the govenment gatewayID

I have tried to call HMRC several times, but either cant get hold of anyone or am put on hold after a brief initial conversation.

This situation is now getting quite worrying as I need to submit the corporation tax return by the end of the month - but have no way of doing this as I dont have access to the government gateway site .

I am now getting really stressed about this and it is impacting on my mental health Can anyone help with any solutions? Can I get the government gateway reset, Can I apply again ? Can they send a code to the registered office address and I can reset things ??

Thanks all in advance

Look through your emails

Your Government Gateway user ID will have been sent to the email address you used to set up the account.
You should carry out a search on that email address to try and find the email with your user ID.
If you find it, you can follow the guidance for resetting your password.

If you still do not have your Government Gateway user ID or password

You will need to create a new Government Gateway account. You can use the same email address for this as before.

The problem is they don't have access to that email address.

Which means I think their only option is to create a new gateway.

And is a reminder to everyone: don't let someone else create key accounts for you!

Having gone through this process with HMRC for my daughter's business, you will need to go through creating a new gateway ID. The problem you have is that to file you tax return you will need to go through the verification process again where they post you an authorisation code to the company registered address which will delay things. You'll need that code to "link" the company to your gateway ID to then file the tax return.
I'm afraid not much you can do about that with the time you have available, especially if you are unable to get hold of the person with access to the email.

Great, thank you for this detailed answer. I think the only way to go is to apply for another gateway ID and get HMRC to send the letter out in the post to the registered office address. Fingers crossed

thanks guys for such detailed answers and sterling help.....i feel like I am making progress. This is what i have done.

I have created a new Government Gateway ID account using my personal email and mobile number

I have then requested a copy of the companies UTR number - this will arrive in the post and will take upto 15 days to arrive.

My question is this; Once I have the company UTR is it simply a case of signing into the Government Gateway, and linking the newly created gateway account to the company using the UTR?? Is there any other process/information that needs to be completed in order to submit a Corporation tax retern??

    Once again, this is a hugh weight off my shoulders, I feel im making progress and mental health is better already : -}

Hopefully your making some in roads but this might make you smile, my son paid his corporation bill several months back, and even got the refund I think he's been waiting for all year......... today he got a nice letter from HMRC saying his payment was overdue and a nice fine to go along with it.

He's left it with the accountant now to reply (as there was a danger he was going to be pretty rude) The left hand does not appear to know what the right hand is doing at good old HMRC perhaps they are all still working from home and only popping into the office occasionally

Best of luck filling your returns and keep smiling ?
