Not really, there is a reason that they have a reputation for being unreliable, and producing poor quality work, it is generally well earned.

In the 25 years that we have been building websites professionally ive yet to find a reliable Indian web developer who lasts.
You might be better partnering with a UK company.

@Richard P - why India?

There are plenty of UK freelancers who will be low cost and far more efficient.

Having worked for an Indian web/software company, no.

All experience and CVs are fake/grossly exaggerated, most project references will be internal projects not for clients and "everyone" will have "worked" on them.

If you can tell them exactly what you want in a way that they understand (not you understand) and be patient, then you might get something that's okay.

However, the same can be said for ChatGPT, which is faster and cheaper.

Smaller companies will outsource the work to other Indian companies, when they do that you've just doubled the language barrier.

Having done IT recruitment in the thames valley for nearly 27 years one thing was very clear.

Large Indian software houses/consultancies,where a lot of the developers used by the smaller ones actually start out at, are very rigidly structured.

They have rigid teams with a hierarchy, the devs are often very pigeon holed and are for want of a better analogy developing on a production line so they become specialised in one particular task/area/skill.

By contrast UK software companies if you ignore the big behemoths like fujitsu tend to have more diverse roles - people are (to use old job titles) more analyst programmers than programmers - they are more expected to think about a problem , come up with a solution, develop the code test it and maybe even be involved in implementation.

If you are doing small projects that is what you need, not a person who will say "yes" to whatever they are asked but then struggle to deliver as it requires them to go outside their comfort zone.

They are not all like that but a very large percentage are and from thousands of miles away it is hard to identify so what you end up with is people trying to reuse and modify code that was written to do something else just because they know it rather than creating a best fit solution. That may be a quick cheap solution to the requirement but if they have made a wrong assumption it goes very wrong and can often require complete rewrites which if they are on a fixed price deal mean they just ghost you.

If cheap is your driving force then that becomes more likely

I know that is a generalisation but it is my experience

I don't blame you for trying to find low cost and good quality because that is the definition of "value".

But from experience, somewhat counter-intuitively, you get better value by paying more, and the same project can actually cost you less if done by a quality UK-based company.

As the owner of a UK web agency with all my staff here in the UK, I don't expect you to believe me. You'll probably need to find out for yourself by learning the lesson again (as it sounds like you've already had a bad experience), but once you do, look for a UK-based freelancer or agency.

    Paul.
this is the bit i mean - trying to do it on the cheap so tendency to try and reuse code even if not 100% sure it will solve the business issue - find out when you get to testing phase it does not and you have wasted all of the prior work with a need to go back to square one (the point at which they run and hide)

Start decently creating well researched specs etc with regular updates/waypoints and at the end you are more likely to have a quality solution

It is a gamble - IF it works right going down the path that was guessed at then great, if not the pain and £ go up quick

Greetings of the day! (wink, wink) I've worked with a few over the years, and you'll have the initial 'honeymoon period' where things go reasonably well. A few weeks/months in, and things turn to sh*t. I ended up spending so much time micro managing, it just wasn't worth it. Never forget the saying 'buy cheap, buy twice'. It really is a false economy, so my advice would be to hire a good (not cheap) freelancer in the UK.

What I'm struggling to understand is why look for "low cost but good quality indian company" on a UK Business Forum 😂
