looking for Hard disk recovery company

I have a hard disk (1TB) I need get data back from, I had it tested and I need to send it off to a recovery center so they can take the disk apart and do there magic..
(Software recovery wont work)

I was quoted £1,100, does anyone know a reliable and cheaper recovery company?

If the drive will require taking apart then £1100 seems to be a good price. We have paid 10 times that in the past!

Have the recovery company given you a fixed price without seeing the drive? We normally have to send the drive off to them before we get a price.

Also find out how much they will charge should the recovery fail.

What happened to the drive?

As above really if they are taking the disc apart and the data is really of value to you then you probably won't find it much cheaper then that.

Did the hard drive fail or did you simply loose the data?

yeah it was a fixed price. the hard disk failed, i tried a few software recovery options myself then took it to a professional company and they also tried software recovery , then said it was a physical issue - with the heads i think. so i think the data/disk is ok but its just that the heads cant read the disk

We used a company called retrodata.co.uk about 2-3times and they've had success, they've scanned the drive the last few times and emailed the quote and list of recoverable files for you to confirm, we've said no sometimes as customer couldnt afford. Price has been £350-450+vat each time. I would send an external harddrive as well, otherwise they're sting you £80 for that too.

Ive used a company called Fields Data Recovery a couple of times. Rough price I think I paid was £300 for 150Gb hard drive recovery.

Ask them what they would charge for the 1Tb though.

thanks worldy / r0bbyr0b - both worth looking at, in fact the Fields Data Recoveryis just 10 minutes away from me, so thats realy handy just hope the prices are for physical errors and not where softare can be used to get the data back, anyway calling them should make all that clear.

I have I tried 2-3 different ones. took 20 hours to examin 4% of the disk - and that was the fastest software - also durring this time the software was so processor hungry i couldnt us my PC. I took it to a professional disk recovery and they tried software recovery for a few days, and then told me it was physical - heads....

which is why i was looking for a cheaper company fix the physical disk issues.

Anyway thank for the 2 good suggestions frm worldy / r0bbyr0b - I spoke to sales guy for one of these comapnies and I should only have to pay £200-£400 max if its fixable, and the company is only 10 mins away. so looks like the you saved me £700-900 thanks very much ;-)

recovery service will surely charge high... however I would suggest that you get a working HDD identical to your broken drive then very carefully transfer the platter of your broken drive to the new one. that may help you recover the data if the board is the only issue.
just a suggestion, you'll need special tool for that.

I dont think £2-400 is too much for data thats critical - I think im increasing the risk of losing all the data significantly by opening up the drive myself - also with the data recovery service i dont have t buy a new disk, they copy the data onto a disk which they lend to me for a couple of weeks. so i can copy it onto my existing disks

I know this sounds stupid but try putting the drive in a freezer for a few hours (In a bag to keep it dry) and then powering it up and trying the software recovery. I have known this to work in cases where heads get stuck. As long as none of the heads have actually crashed this may work.

Don't attempt changing platters, pcb unless you know what your doing.

Lexius, hope you get back what you need - for future proofing your data, I wouldn't use any backup software other than Shadowprotect - google it. Nothing can touch it.

Lexius, Data recovery from recovery center is definitely costly and they also not guarantee for 100% recovery anyways you can contact Stellar Data Recovery Company from there company website or call them +31 (0) 30 7600 700 ...Recover charges of this company is lower than any other company but you have to pay good amount to recover your data.

I think the company I already mentioned above is fine for me, i certainly have no intention of the following: fixing it myself by taking it apparent, putting it in the fridge (yes leemason that does sound rather si...), nether will i be putting in the toaster, oven, microwave or any other kitchen appliance

OK, OK, enough of silly suggestions (although I have known it to work...). I've used Commercial & General (http://www.comgen.co.uk/recovery.htm) in the past and they are very good. They are not the cheapest but at the end of the day I know they do a very good job.

just a suggestion, you'll need special tool for that.

Do not under any circumstances attempt this unless you have a clean room and know exactly what you are doing.

You'll always be able to find something cheaper, but if you _need_ the data, then £1000+ is the going rate for a replacement disk/platter/process board and the time to get it off etc.
