Lloyds CardNet - a payment gateway?

Hi,

Wasn't sure if this belonged in Finance or Ecommerce, but here we are.

Trying to find the best business bank for a new web site and came across Lloyds and their CardNet offering. In the blurb they mention that CardNet works with your chosen "Payment Service Provider".
Can anyone confirm whether CardNet is an alternative to Sage or PayPal, or is this another system in the process? The Lloyds person who I had a quick chat with this week didnt convince me either way!

Thanks

Lloyds Cardnet provide you with the merchant account. If you require it, I believe they offer a basic payment gateway for taking online payments and also a chip and pin machine for face to face transactions.

You can use any other payment gateway, like CharityClear, Sagepay etc with the Cardnet merchant account. Using another payment gateway would be advisable to do instead of using the basic one Cardnet provides.

This is a useful payment gateway/merchant account price comparison tool www.paymentbrain.co.uk.

Before signing up to any service, make sure you compare all costs, not just the headline rates.

There are two elements to taking cards online (outside of services like Paypal) - Merchant Account (the banking part) and Gateway (connects your site to the merchant account). Both are chargeable and, if you choose the wrong ones, may cost you more than a basic Paypal account.

Are you a member of the FSB? If you are, look at their Streamline offer.

Hi there,

just thought I would add my pennys worth... :D Lloyds cardnet are excellent if you are spending lots of money with them... and for one of our businesses I have managed to get the best rates of any merchant bank out there based on our spend... and I know this as I have gone and spoken to most of them. However as a start up they offer horrible rates.... but 3 weeks ago I spoke with another excellent player in this market called Paypoint. They have excellent integration with websites and CMS systems, and the rates are superb for new businesses, and most of all they are really trying to win market share. They are a massive global company so your money is as secure as it can be... I have no connection to them as we sell hardware, but many of my clients ask us to handle this part for them in server hardware/infrastructure deals... so that's why I sound like I am on the payroll....:( However just to reiterate, payment gateways are not what we do or ever intend to do, so I can certainly pass on some details of the tech sales person I spoke to if you want them, but we are in no way connected to them.

Happy hunting.
