Linking Opinion needed Please.

My SERP's position has be usurped by my opposition. He has generated a lot of links as may be seen by these pages - there are lots of them.

bigpetsstore.net/reports/Electric%20Fence_14635.html
easyanimalslive.biz/reports/Horse%20Fencing_14633.html
pettreenews.net/reports/Horse%20Fencing_14633.html

In your opinion - are these legit or will they be picked up by Google. In other words - must I follow suite to protect my position?

Those links look absolutely awful - there's no need for continued link repetition, and it's obvious spam and not likely to pass a manual review.

However, don't hold your breath waiting for Google to act - if this guy is extremely niche and his link farm very small, Google might not get around to killing it for a couple of years.

The good news is that it really shouldn't be hard to outcompete with a minor link campaign - the keywords don't look too competitive, and the link sources for this competitor at least appear very weak.

A big caveat, though, is that you really shouldn't post live link to other people's link farms - all you're doing is providing link juice to your competitor's links. :)

Best sue the firm that I paid to check my site was in the right direction then.
I wouldn't go that far but I would question why there is this weird redirection thing going on. Every time I check the source, the code appears then I'm taken of somewhere strange.

Google does like your site though as you do have site links so it really shouldn't be that difficult to thrash you competitor. Sorting out the site would probably do it.

Those links are not why he is above you since Google is not indexing them, in fact I am struggling to get the absolute URLs of those links out of G's database. There is no link juice from them. You need to push the generic term electric fencing so realign your heading and titles to support it and then build some inbound links on that generic term, make sure you also get some branding too since Google is appraising brand now. In addition take the 301 off your home link and get it to resolve directly to your root url rather than through the redirect, its a bit messy to 301 something like that.
