joined LinkedIn because someone wanted me to.

Now I've started using it again. One feature I particularly like is the "people you might know" thing. Usually I do know at least some of them, and would like to reconnect or network with them. This is really good. I like it!

(Thanks to Adi for the nudge in the right direction. )

Who else is appreciating the benefits of LinkedIn?

Hi

Yep we use linkedin a lot, its a great way to keep in contact with old work friends as well as getting references from them to post on your profile.

Always handy when a company whats to know who they are working with.

Can't believe someone said linkedin was for people who smell of wee!! lol

I use it quite a bit now and don't think I smell bad *sniff*

The discussion groups are useful, links to blogs, chance to show work experience and endorsements from others... all good :)

I find LinkedIn great for research - the Q&A functionality is very well used. I also use LinkedIn for research about people ahead of calling or meeting them. Particularly when you receive an enquiry via e-mail and you are not quite sure whether it is genuine or not.

I keep my status updated a couple of times a week (purely business related updates) & it is a great way of keeping your network up to date with what you are up to. I tend to meet people on twitter and then over time connect with them on LinkedIn.

I've had a few clients via LinkedIn, but don't use it proactively enough to generate lots of work via LinkedIn.

Similar to any social networking site for business people, the key to winning work via linkedin, is to take the connection off line for a phone call or meeting in person.

I haven't tried it yet, but plan to at the earliest opportunity, is to pre-network with LinkedIn. If you are going to an event or conference. Request an attendance list ahead of the event. Connect with people before the event via linked in & start building the relationship before you meet, so that you can agree to meet up at the event. Takes away some of the guess work and luck...

At the moment (and before we move the executive village to a Ning site), I run the online community of the executive village solely through a linkedin group which i run and moderate. With 250+ members in the group it's a very handy piece of functionality.

There is a UKBF group on there although its pretty quiet and full of self promotion. i am thinking of setting a group up - from looking around a t few i think its important to aim for something of interest to people as opposed to simple self marketing.

Perhaps from your perspective maybe a hygiene at work group or a recycling of used paper waste group - this will inform people whilst getting your products in front of them (should they want)

Let us know how you get on.

As a digression from this urinary stuff LinkedIn is fantastic for penetrating hard to reach specialist industries which build barriers around key decision makers such as pharmaceutical etc. One of my clients has a dream 40 target (see ultimate sales machine) he is trying to penetrate. He has set up a great group on LinkedIn which adds massive value as well as webinars etc. As a result his network and reputation is spreading virtually by itself. We repositioned his service and he has just got his first piece of business from this strategy and is in contact with a load more. Take a lot of time and effort though and not for the casual.
Regards to all
