Just read a thread on here about linking up with a business, and had a thought. Wouldn't it be a great idea to have a resource where companies could advertise/offer link exchanges?

Exchanging links is bad juju in any shape or form unless there the link is relevant, adds value and is part of the page contents.

Yeah I don't think we should have a thread where people publicly violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines with artificial links. Seems to me that would be asking for a bunch of penalties to go around.

What makes more sense is to form real partnerships and relationships with other businesses either locally to each other where there are some product synergies (think silverware retailer with interior designers etc) or just generally where synergies exist. Not only will the links actually be relevant/useful but the partnerships can result in extra business directly.

Back in 2006 when I first started in Ecommerce there were a million "Link farms" which you could join and exchange links with other members.
There is a reason they arent there now.

There are still some website owners implementing exchanging links for site exposure and some of them are not related to their website. This is to get traffic from the visitors which usually not targeted users.

Yes dear link exchange is the good idea to increase similar traffic, if the traffic is very low on similar traffic than it gives bad result, also you need to provide space on the web site where you want to link exchange.

Link exchanges works like a charm, I stumbled upon many "link exchanges" (example, 3 websites dominating guitar tab niche by linking to each other, making millions...), although they are not the "old type" of link exchanges where people used to just slam tens or hundreds of links on each page. Anyway, if you are not a multi-million dollar business a.k.a "to big to fail" in Googles eyes, then I wouldn't suggest doing it. Also it would cost a small fortune to find someone who would know how to do this correctly and efficiently.

Of course link exhanges still work. You just need to think outside the box.

Indeed they do, but not in the way the OP suggested. If the links are relevant and add value and are are part of the information flow on the page then of course they will work.

There is its called sape, google obviously don't like it though lol. Very powerful if you know how to pick the correct sites though. And laugh out loud at links needing to be relevant

If you sell mouse houses then a link to a site selling mice is relevant and on topic. A reciprocal link recommending the mouse house for your new mice is logical and useful. This has always been the case and Google will reward you.

But a plumber exchanging links with a dog walker is a waste of time.

Or of course you could just use sape as Mr Boring suggests...

No-follow but why not let Google decide if it adds value. A useful link can help both parties.

My response didn't had the slightest suggestion that I think that SAPE is something that should be incorporated in ones SEO campaign. Although if we were asking the questions - can SAPE links give higher rankings, then the answer would be - yes they can. If we asked questions like: are SAPE links are a long term thing ? No. Will you get penalized if you use SAPE links ? Most likely. Are there any better, less risky ways of ranking ? Yes.

Apart from all that SAPE links do work for many niches and businesses who make millions of dollars per week. Those businesses are mainly: pharma, casino, binary options/forex and affiliate.

I didn't suggest using sape lol, would recommend not using it unless if you know what you're doing. You seem to just spit out regurgitated info from google on what works or not, they just want to sell you their ads obviously lol.
I can assure you links don't have to be relevant to move your serp up, obviously if all your links are completely irrelevant then you wouldn't last long in a manual review though.
Why don't you go on to a internet marketing forum and see how your posts go down on there lol, try blackhatworld

Please don't do link exchanges, it really won't help you. Google downgraded reciprocal links some time ago!
