Anyone notice any changes to their rankings at the New Years Update? I've took a right kicking for some reason and gone down 2 pages on 1 word and 4 on another. Not panicking just wondered if anyone else saw changes and has any ideas what has changed

P

Pembrokeshire Directory

Our Homepage has gone to a 4 all our links pages are 3, Blogs are 3 and a couple of other have gone to a 2 only one dropped and that was our photo blog that dropped to a 2 from a 3 as haven't had time to keep up todate :(

I've noticed a few changes. A personal site went from PR3 to N/A and then to back to PR3.

Our Cybernautix site is back to PR4 from 3. I don't think it makes any difference. Perhaps our clients who are linked from the homepage will gain a little. Otherwise .. not much.

PR is vanity, SERPS is sanity

I’ve seen various small movements, which appear to be for the better. But I believe Google has increased their punishment on duplicate content, as I have seen various other people with this issue suffer. So check for duplicate content, which could include:

1) www and no www in front of the domain name.
2) An index.??? For the home page .
3) Small pages with very similar content on them.
4) Different URL’s pointing to the same web page or content.
5) The IP address showing up instead of your domain name.
6) Proxy servers showing your website under a different URL.

Hope this helps.

I've gone down one place, now top of page 2 in one of my searches (instead bottom of page one), still on page one for a couple more.

Still reasonably happy as I've only recently had a new website and have been promoting it for around 8 weeks. My old site never got past page 6, and I think it takes a few months for it all to work.

Very pleased with our results since Googles latest update... having said that - my thanks go to James at http://www.justoneuk.com who has recently started working on SEO for us!!

http://www.noiseairconsultants.co.uk - we were on page 3 for our top keyword 'acoustic enclosures' and yesterday we moved up to first page in the no 4 spot, also no 1 for 'audiology booth' and no 1 and 'soundproof music rooms'... so yes, chuffed.

glad to here it, and James does always come across as a nice chap on here so good to see he knows his onions.

Reguarding my own drops i reckon some back links have been devalued but again, i'm no expert:)

Ooooh, talking about me behind my back huh? :p You could have waited until you hit the no1 spot! :D

I see you at 9th for acoustic enclosures but not for long.
(see what I did there?)

Google update has hit hard on a lot of sites this time, especially on pagerank. Even I'm beginning to believe that it almost has no value. Looks like anchortext links rule the roost now.

I'd agree with that too. I'm sure the finger will be pointed at directories but it could be forums, blogs, or you might literally have lost one or two good incoming links. Have you had a drop in pagerank at all?

my toolbar PR actually went up from 2 to 3 but that does really mean anything in the big scheme of things so i'm lead to believe

Google has sort of hinted that although the recommendation for directory listing has been removed from the guidelines they aren't downgrading the value of the links. They do say however that spammy links (such free-for-all directories) will be ignored.

yup... Google change my websites PR from PR0 and now its PR3... I'm glad on his, because our team effort finally has been noticed by Google... :D

Your ranking was determined months ago, long before they published changes to the Snotbar PageRank. In fact even though now have a bit of green slime in your google toolbar it's already out of date. Google will reindex each page on your site every time it visits. You could easily go up able down the index half a dozen times before you see any changes to the TBPR.

And remember PageRank is named after the inventor Larry Page not the actual rank of your page.

Interesting result for me.

I hadn't looked - having been ridiculously busy since the New Year (now I know why!) - before reading this post and don't know what my PR is as I don't have the toolbar and don't really care anyway BUT the interesting thing is that one of my internal pages has knocked my home page off the top spot for my main search term so that I now have an internal page (which has the products for that search term) at no.1 and my home page at no.2. So internal page has come from nowhere to take top place.

This page is not listed in any directories and has no links that I have created to it other than it is accessible from other pages of my site.

The only explanations I have for this is:
1. it is mentioned quite a lot in forums relevant to the subject matter
2. it does get a lot of traffic
3. it is directly relevant to the search term

Some of my other keywords which hovered between positions 1-3 are now all at number 1.

Great stuff. Hope it stays that way! How nice not to have to do any SEO but let things take their course naturally.

Yep indeedy! We've been bouncing around all Xmas and still are!

On page 1, then dropped off completely, then back on page 2. Now on page 4. Totally crazy, but I'm not going to let it bother me too much, and just keep a focus on more important issues.

At least now I know it's not just me that's affected. Thought Google had it in for me!!
