Hi

I have noticed recently on my iPhone that if i call certain business's and institutions it shows who they are in caller ID without them being saved in my phone. So i called a hospital recently and when i dialed the number into my phone it came up with the hospital as if i had it saved. The same when i called a hotel.

Now im wanting this for my business. I'm assuming i need to register my number somewhere on some sort of database, does anyone why how to do this.

I have searched and searched google but cant find any information?

Any help would be great!

CLI or CID (Calling Line Identification or Caller Identification) can consist of two things: a name and a number. However, the ability of service providers and both hardware and software to effectively deal with both varies.

It sounds like your callers are using a system that is sending both and you have a phone that can deal with receiving both.

In the USA they have a system called CNAM that can lookup a name from the number, but as far as I know that has not been implemented in the UK. And there is the ever present risk of spoofing, some would think it fun to apparently receive a call from Theresa May, but of course it could be spoofing for criminal purposes.

So to answer the OP's question, I believe the sending of the name needs to come from your equipment or service provider.

If @cjd happens on this thread he could doubtless throw more light on this.

I don't believe there is a protocol for sending a description to the line when making an outgoing call (although I could be wrong about this, as I haven't had to deal with switch programming in a while) but I've certainly never seen anything like it being passed through in billing data from the carriers. I suspect the phone is looking up the number from 'tinterweb.

When an unsaved number calls my iPhone it sometimes comes up with "Maybe Person Name" or "Maybe Company Name"

If you have added Facebook to your phone it can get these details from there. It also scans your emails and looks for the phone number within Emails then links it to the name that sent the email.

Hi, Its not an app on my phone as i dont really have many apps. It does it for outgoing too. Like i said if i call one of these companies from my phone once ive entered the number it pops up under the number with the name, as if it saved. So for example if i call home, but dial the number rather than use my contacts, when i finish entering the number it comes up with 'home' under it. So when i called the hospital it came up with 'Bishop Hospital' under the number, but i dont have it saved.

I agree that its looking the number up from the internet, but i would like to know where abouts on the internet. You would like it would be from google accounts, put i have a google page for my business but it still doesn't work, so im assuming its some sort of database, but dont know which one.

Hi, Its not an app on my phone as i dont really have many apps.

It might be something that is installed in the background. For example, older Facebook mobile apps used to upload your mobile phone's contacts name and numbers, by default, to the Facebook site so people could be found by their phone number. They didn't make the users of the app aware of this at the beginning. (I believe the setting has now be set to default off).

I believe this is a background service on the phone - not a stand-alone app, but built into the phone app. Certainly that's how it works on a Samsung - it can be controlled, but only within the "phone/dialing" menu.

I believe the service is provided by White Pages (although there are other providers too), and they access your contacts as part of the service to build up their database.

No idea how you register to be on the database though.
