Kitting out a new shop?

Hi all,

Has anyone got any advice for kitting out a new shop, i.e what's best to go for in terms of shelving and display equipment? My products are a variety of home made confectionery items, ranging from big jars to small individual sweets. Obviously I am on a budget, so any tips on saving money would be ideal!! Any help gratefully received.

We use Wickes shelving in our sweet shop, on a recommendation from a friend who also runs a sweet shop.

IKEA do a similar system called IVAR but more expensive.

I've heard shelving4shops has quite a versatile range of shelving units, both new and used to choose from. Might be worth having a look!

Keep an eye out for any businesses going into liquidation in the local newspaper, local auctions, or house clearance stores. They're often keen to get rid of their fittings quickly as it's the last thing to go after their stock and shelving companies offer them very little for it, if you can get in there before them then you can do the same! Most shelving companies then charge a huge premium on the resale of it. If you're flexible with time I would be patient and wait for the right opportunity to come or else you could end up paying 5 times at much.

We have some spare gondola shelving that we want rid of, if you Google 'Retail Shelving Shop Gondola 1250mm, 6 Shelves' - it's similar to the top link - it needs a good clean and I'm not sure how much of it there is but let me know if you're interested. We're based in Newcastle if you could collect or we could put it on a pallet to deliver.

Thanks, going to give shelving4shops a try, having looked at their website looks like they have some decent stuff and a showroom to check it all out- they give you free advice on setting out too.

its completely free all you need to do is pick up the product from the person house!

Found some items that look like a good fit for your shop via the sites below under keyword search 'Shop Display'. These items are second hand, but came across several examples that would probably fit your type of business well.

I guess it all depends on how much you want to chase down a bargain but you could try local auction houses and of course getting into some DIY projects to give your shop that unique finish that moves beyond generic shelving.

Also just have a think outside the box... Ive seen cabinets as in prettyy high office cabinets turned on their side and become the till area before now in a shop.

I think you can set up accounts on eBay, Amazon and be a retailer there. You could also set up social media accounts as well (though it is quite risky) but it is definitely inexpensive to setup and reaching out for customers is easy. You can start up with little things until you can fully establish your own shop and business site

Regarding the sweet displays, the individual sweet acrylic tubs can be pretty expensive. An alternative is the tilt bins range. These are 600mm wide and have either 3,4,5,6 or 9 individual tilting compartments made from clear acrylic that tilt forward enough to access the contents. They're mainly aimed at van storage, but they'd also be great for sweets.
