keyword tool - google

Hi all

why does google have a tool for helping you generate key words? i was told google doesnt use key words? in terms of SEO i mean

have i go this wrong? thank you!

It's a tool to help you create keyword lists for Adwords campaigns. Hoever, SEO professionals also use the tool to guage which keywords experience the highest search volumes, and therefore which ones should be targeted through your SEO campaign.
It's true that Google is putting more emphasis on relevance rather than specific keywords but you'll also notice that a lot of websites that rank highly in the natural results are still optimised for keywords. In the future this may change but for now keyword optimisation is still effective despite what others may say

The average number of words in a search is now 4. Use the google keyword tool to begin your research but don't become fixated on the answers it gives.

The average number of words in a search is 4. You will never be able to research the millions of combinations of words so just concentrate on producing good quality copy that includes your main keywords.

An overall average of 4 keywords in a search means that there will still be an incredible large amount of people doing 1, 2 & 3 word searches. I run lots of Adword campaigns where I put in loads of permutations of a few keywords - and yet week-on-week it's just a few of them that get 99.9% of the traffic. In virtually all cases it's the 2 & 3 word searches that get the traffic (I use phrase & broad matching carefully to make sure I'm not missing the longer searches - but on the whole the traffic just isn't there for these). One of my retail campaigns does incredibly well for a 1-word search...

Sweeping generalisation: the people doing 4-word searching aren't buying they are looking for information.

So, really use Google's tool and monitor your results (with Google Analytics), adapt, tweak, tune ...

Hi I am new to SEO and trying to do it myself to my cleaning company website - bloomsburycleaning.co.uk.

I read in Viney, D. 'Get to the top on Google' that digitalpoint.com is the best free facility to gauge keyword popularity, but digital point no longer seems to be working properly with the demise of wordtracker. It also says 'no data available' when I put in popular keywords within my line of business. Is Google keyword tool a suitable (or better) replacement for this?

Short answer - yes, get it from the 'horses mouth'.

Warning, be very careful about following SEO tips from anything that points to outdated resources. It could get you in a lot of trouble.

Hi Courtesan,

You've got it right but those statements actually refer to different things.

There is a specific meta tag called keywords that goes into html pages, Google doesn't use those. Yahoo and MSN do though

The keywords tool isn't anything to do with that specific meta tag. It allows people to look up words to see how often they're searched and to choose words to be found under. So Google has that tool so that people like you can find words to bid PPC against beyond the obvious

And Seeing as Shawn Hogan (the owner & founder of digitalpoint solutions) is being sued (along with others) for a MASSIVE fraud on Ebay afiliate marketing, I doubt Shawn will be fixing anything anytime soon!
