Sorry folks. First time on the forum for a couple of weeks and my first new thread is a rant about jury service
Just wondering how many of you have had the same problem as me....
One of my staff members has been called up for jury service at quite short notice. Although he is only supposed to be doing ten days in total, this has now run into the third week.
This means that I have been without 50% of my office staff and 25% of my total staff on and off for the last three weeks.
I know that while he is away I don't have to pay his salary. However, when he does eventually come back he will still be entitled to take the remainder of his annual holiday leave.
I could employ a temp but that is not practical. You can't replace a person with 40 odd years experience in shipping with someone from a staff agency.
Can I get any compensation for this? Err no, of course not.
I think it's wrong that jury service disproportianately affects smaller companies.
If one of two people from your average Tesco branch have to go on jury service there will still be a couple of hundred others there to cover for them.
Perhaps if enough of us are in the same boat we could push our MP's to try and do something about this?
Rant over now!
Glen
