Joomla or Wordpress

I'm going to create new CMS website, but I cannot decide which one to use - Joomla or Wordpress. I have some experience with Joomla as I already created 4 websites using version 1.5, but on the other side I have none experience with Wordpress. I know that decision should be based on what I need, so here is an example: velejapark.com . My site will be a bit less comprehensive, but in addition it should have nice image gallery. Please have in mind that I need similar functionality as the map which you can see under "ponudba" -> "- trgovine". I'm not sure if that can be done with either, but lets be optimistic.

Template is going to be greenish as well. Oh, I must not forgot that my programming skills are very limited so please keep that in mind as well.

Thanks for advices and suggestions in advance!

They are both capable of powering most brochure and destination sites; with the right plugins.

Wordpress would be the simplest option and has the nicer administrative system and content publication pipeline. As you've already deployed sites with Joomla you know the deal with that one already.

Neither however are shining examples of good code; Joomla is the more guilty party there and is a bit bloaty.

They are both hugely popular solutions though and are always brought up in CMS discussions; due to popularity and the fact that they are free. So play with WP and see what you think; if you can handle Joomla you can handle WP; no contest.

But popularity doesn't mean best; so I'll try to add something that might be useful.

So I'll throw this little beauty out there: http://expressionengine.com/

If free isn't your primary concern; its definitely worth a look as its not expensive and is known for its performance, feature set and usability, its built on CodeIgniter so has a clean MVC codebase. Also you won't need to rely so much on plugins and its skinning system is much nicer (IMHO).

Trial before you buy any commercial CMS though. As it might not be for you even if it is attractive.

As you are preferring to have image gallery in your website it is better to go for WordPress.
What a load of rubbish. Joomla has some excellent photo gallery themes and plugins.

A client of mine is looking at expression engine but the lack of an easily obtainable trial is putting them off.

And it's not cheap either: $300 for a commercial license.

Not sure I agree with you about the skins - most of the ones I tried were pretty naff. EE is designed for you to build your own, the idea of a plug and play theme isn't what it's about. Which is why people prefer WP.

This is also one of the reasons why I chose wordpress.

Which reason?

Just to clarify (again)...I use both and choose according to many factors including (not exhaustive) the proposed use of the site, the possible growth of the site, content requirements, extended functions etc...

User skill base is a minor consideration as...

1. I manage it for our clients OR
2. Both can be learnt quite easily as they are both very similar in their CORE functions. I know both have different ways to accomplish the same thing...publish content inside a CMS but in essence they are doing a very similar jobby.

Well when you try to play around with a Joomla template you better have some basic programming skills... Wordpress templates are way more easy to play with. But that's just me ;)

Have you ever sliced C++ into a theme :|

I know I am splitting semantics but....

In addition, you can accomplish a million and one things in Joomla without ever going near the SOURCE CODE of your css/html.

You use modules and the built in css function boxes within the module etc...

To add to the great advice already offered.

We're often asked by our customers whether to go for Joomla or WordPress.

As the old saying goes; there are many ways to skin a cat so we recommend our users to install WordPress and Joomla on their web hosting accounts and give both a try.

Set yourself say 4 hours to try building the site in Joomla. And the same time building your site in WordPress. Then compare how far you've got and then continue with the solution that works best for you.

On the face of it it could seem like a waste of four hours, and may not be suited to small projects, but in the scheme of things it could be time well spent.

In my view this is too simplistic. The choice of systems should be based on what the business is trying to achieve, not on how the person gets on with the software in a few hours. Just my view :)

I tend to recommend Wordpress as I just couldn't get along with Joomla and thought if I struggled with it then most of my clients would. I also suggest that if client is serious about SEO then they really need a regularly updated blog which is what Wordpress was initially created for (although its much more than that now). If they want just a standard brochure site that they can easily update themselves then I use Concrete5 as its by far the easiest to use CMS i've come across.
