Hi,

I am exploring starting a business selling products in the UK that are being manufactured in Turkey. I have conducted research and I am looking to explore the following products in Turkey:

  • Vehicle parts or accessories (B2B Sales)
  • Home Furniture
  • Baby Clothing & Accessories
  • Gold & Precious Stone Jewelleries
  • Leather goods

I am planning a trip to Istanbul for research and networking and would like to know the best areas to visit to meet suppliers/manufacturers that specialise in each product listed above. Based on research I know Masko is a good area for Furniture, are there similar areas that specialise in the other products specified.

Hi Osebz,

I hope you are well. That sounds like a good idea. I toyed with the idea of importing Turkish biscuits almost 2 years ago, but because I wasn't liquid - I couldn't match the importing fees. I am still in touch with the manufacturer and more than happy to put you in touch. The manufacturing plant is based near Istanbul and would be perfect for you to go past it on your travels!

Let me know if you would like me to make introductions.

Best wishes,
Abs

I think the two Turkey regions for furniture are Istanbul and Kayseri, however, the UK has very specific regulations for Home Furniture that are more rigorous than the rest of Europe, if you have no experience of this I would drop it from your list, or at least do your homework prior to travelling to find qualified manufacturers that already sell to the UK and that have up to date certificates proving the goods are tested and meet UK standards. You would be seen as the 'first importer' into the UK, so you are legally responsible if the goods do not meet UK regulations.

Turkey has a large furniture making capacity, however, it supplies relatively small amounts of furniture to the UK. Some would see this as an opportunity, others would ask why and be cautious because of this.

Hi Washington,
Thank you for your response, I really appreciate you highlighting a major aspect of consideration. Do you know where I can get all the standards that a manufacturer must meet and any other information regarding compliance to standards?

I see from the reply, the answer is no !

Start here, for now, this should help you find some of the correct regulations

I expect vehicle parts and baby clothing will have equally stringent regulations, if you go into foreign sourcing with such an open remit, you must have a lot of experience or have money to burn to gain experience through mistakes.

Perhaps you need the help of a sourcer or sourcing company with particular experience in the category you decide upon.

If you are a lone wolf hoping to go out there and make a killing....good luck....you will need it !!

Hi,
I can tell you that a lot of Turkish homeware and textile manufacturers exhibit at Heimtextil in Frankfurt.
heimtextil.messefrankfurt.com/frankfurt/en.html
You can either go to the fair and meet them (they'll likely send English speaking sales staff) or browse the exhibitor directory of the last Heimtextil for their contact details.

The same goes for your other categories. Turkish manufacturers find it easy to sell to Germany and attend most of the big fairs.

When you are in Turkey, try Bursa and Konya for furniture and textiles too. You would be wise to hire an interpreter while you are there - if you don't speak the language.

You could also consider approaching established brands in Turkey that aren't represented in the UK - but should be. For example, Pasabahce has the best range of inexpensive home glassware in the world in my opinion and I don't see their products in UK stores.
pasabahce.com/en

If you use a VPN to mask your location, you can get on the Turkish version of Trendyol (the UK one is rubbish) and search for manufacturers.
Example: trendyol.com/lorence-home/cedre-puf-acik-gri-p-107249296?boutiqueId=61&merchantId=105126

As an example of companies that manufacture and sell B2C via Trendyol, but also wholesale B2B
alberohome.com/
lorencehome.com.tr/

Don't neglect Instagram. You'll find the contact details for small manufacturers there.
Search via Turkish hashtags #mobilya (furniture) etc.

(Sorry, I'm not allowed to post links)

I hope that helps.

Hello!
you need to register on b2b trading platforms.
for example, globy.com - B2B wholesale platform is a digital marketplace that allows businesses to buy and sell products in bulk. It now has 50,000 wholesale users worldwide. B2B Marketplace is a directory of wholesale goods suppliers. It has more than 200 categories and hundreds of offers from suppliers from all over the world, including Turkey. Wholesalers, manufacturers and distributors submit each listing themselves. Every day the catalog is visited by more than 2,000 users in search of wholesale products.

From my past experience trying to source products to sell in the UK, Found that to find products targeted I visited trade show exhibitions in the UK and Europe.

In such places, you can find all the suppliers for products you wish to introduce in UK in a very limited amount of time.

Google trade exhibitions in Turkey with "Product Keyword" and you shall find trade exhibitions

All the best
