It the transition across 00:00:00 that marks the beginning of tomorrow.

This means today ends as you get to 00:00:00 and tomorrow begins as you go past 00:00:00

The point is there is an infinitesimally small point in time when it is neither today or tomorrow, spooky eh!

Or in maths speak, the limit of today of time, as time approaches midnight, is 0.

Which means that today can get as close as it likes to zero i.e 23:59:59.9999999* but not 0 => 0:0:0 is tomorrow

Obvious when you think about it.

In the Navy, we never used 00:00, either 23:59 or 00:01... saves this confusion

    I preferred Village People's version ;)

We did a similar thing when doing night work on sites - never use midnight as a time to log an event.

The Edinburgh Festival day starts at around 4am. There's so many late shows they find it easier that way. If you buy tickets for Tuesday at 2am, you're going on Wednesday morning.

I think the answer is nobody knows whether 00:00 belongs to today, tomorrow or yesterday.

To digress, this is a well known problem in calculating how many days have elapsed (or will elapse) since an event. You cannot use 24 hour periods as when seen from 00:01, an event at 23:59 occurred one day ago, even though only 2 minutes have elapsed.

The solution, for anyone that wants to tangle with this, is to convert the date/time to the Julian calendar. Julian days have a number that is an integer, which you can then add or subtract from/to another Julian day number.

    I'll rephrase the question :)

If the match starts at 00:00 tomorrow and it's 18:45 now, does it start in about 5 hours 15 minutes?
    (I assume so)

The match is on tomorrow. The first part of it is at 00:00. The second half starts tomorrow at 00:45. If it were 24 hours later the match would not be on tomorrow.

Technically, midnight (00:00) is the start of a new day. It then runs from 00:00 to 11:59:59.

So within a given day, the midnight of that day has already happened, and the one coming up is the midnight of tomorrow. However, we tend to think of the upcoming midnight to be the midnight of the day we're in as it seems to make a little more sense that way.
