Is this normal for google index

Hi

I submitted a site last week to google, jumped through all the hoops verifying domain, site, sitemap, 301'd my old pages etc etc, after about 12 hours if I wrote

site:domainname

all the pages came up no problems,

I have just done it again and it is only showing 2 pages, where have they all gone??

I know google can take some time indexing sites fully, but when I go onto webmaster tools and check what has been indexed it is saying 0 pages.

A length of string question, how long does it normally take for google to index my little 30page site.

Last time I put a site up it was indexed in two days.

Is there an inbound link to the site - that's what google is looking for.

Yes mate, has a few inbound links.

What I have just noticed in webmaster tools is that it wont let me verify my domain, where you make a selection between www/non www I thought I had done this but its saying I need to verify, would this have anything to do with it?

I know I have set my prefered domain in the htaccess

You shouldn't have to set this in the htaccess. It should be set in your hosting package.

If google is asking you to verify the site it means it has found a version of your homepage without the code.

Have you tried putting all 4 variants into the address bar on you browser:
site.co.uk/
site.co.uk/index.php
www.site.co.uk/
www.site.co.uk/index.php

Each one should land you on the same page.

I have mate and they do, obviously due to the htaccess

What is killing me now is that I have verified with google:-

html tag
Analytics
html file upload

And I have just set up a cname on my DNS and when I go into google it is still saying I need to verify but has

"Already Verified using this method" under Domain Name Provider and all the other options to verify, I have run out of verification options,:O(

Right got google to work by basically setting up a new site within WMT and I didnt even have to verify, it automatically clicked that I prefer www.

Just play the waiting game now.

@fisicx, I know what you mean about 2 days, google seems to have pulled its finger out indexing sites, well I thought it had, and the last couple I have done have been really quick, just really cant see what G doesnt like about this one.

I prefer Bing now because it indexed the site and was showing in the results within hrs

One thing to note is that google have altered the way they give out public information about sites.

E.G. it is common now for a site to be indexed a for a couple of weeks, yet show no cache. if you then search for a snippet of content, it will get returned in the SERP's indicating it IS cached.

Now my brina has been tihinking that maybe Google places all new sites into the supp index (yes it still exists) or possibly another holding pen. Then, once it has been processed, it is let loose.

No I dont even get that, like mentioned I submitted to G and found all pages were crawled and cached, when I wrote site:domain it came back with all pages, it now comes back with 1 page (home page)dropped another page since starting this thread earlier today, the irony of it Googles cache is showing that it passed by just after I did the preferred domain hack today and yet 0 pages indexed in WMT(maybe need to wait for tomorrow for it to show)

If I pull a snippet of content from the home page it gets it, pull a snippet from any other page it doesnt show at all, even an exact match search, same with if I put domain/page.php in the search..Nothing...which is the bit I really dont get....

have you tried www. and the non www. the cache will show differently. why have you actually set the preferred domain is there a reason?

Finally, this isn't something daft like the developer not blocking the development site from google, and Google indexing it is it?
have you checked the dev site cache (if there was a deve site of course). This is quite common. I spoke to somone this week where the entire new site has been indexed on the deve version, thousands of pages.

It can be cured with a 301 redirect match.

Do you think this is why pages are disappearing off the face of the earth, and when they are all gone from the site check they will all bounce back with passion...

I have visions of Matt Cutts flat cap, whistling whilst his sheepdog runs round penning little sheepy sites, once hes got them all and put them through google customs he then lets them go to enjoy the pasture.

I like to run around like a little google lap dog, and play their game, it was an option for me in WMT so I used it, same as why I verifed in every way possible, god I am a good lick a***

Nope I thought about the robot.txt blocking the bot but no, and surely if that was the case Bingbot wouldnt of been able to index it so quickly.

No not a chance of that one.

I have done all the 301's needed.

What does keep spinning around in my head is that the site is a larger version of one that was sat on an EMD, that was about 2-3weeks old then google changed the rules and yes it got a massive kicking from it, but like mentioned I have 301'd all the emd pages correctly.

Do you think the EMD has anything to do with it...but then again it wouldnt stop google indexing surely.

If you have set up a new domain and transfered all the content and then 301'ed from a domain that has been hit, the hit will follow you across, as you have told Gpoogle that the new site is the old site.

In a word...GREAT!

Matt Cutt's has just become Matt Cull's in my book.

OWG do you think this is why I am in the holding pen and the odd indexing, and what are my options now, obviously G will eventually index me, but they are going to sting me like a good'n

Online Business Video

Hi all, interesting thread. I wonder, Urban Publications, is your site now indexed satisfactorily??
We launched new content on a site at the weekend (small 5 pages) - after previously having the single home page / testing page loitering around the web for a few months. The Big G indexed the lot within a couple of hours, now just the home page remains??
We've launched sites in the past (new domains) and got indexed (and ranked for some longtail stuff) very quickly, but this one seems to be blocked for some reason.
Does this issue sort itself out over time, or does anyone have any pointers what else we can do?
All opinions welcome!

Cheers

Paul
