Is there a better phrase to describe an Internet Presence

What is an Internet Presence

There are 4 elements, and businesses should have:

  • Website – your shop window, online brochure and to capture Leads
  • Blog - companies that blog get 54% more visitors and 71% more leads than those that don't
  • Social Media - reach a wider targeted audience and staying in touch with online conversations
  • Audience – An easy way for a targeted audience to Follow you

Where did you get your blog stats? Not sure I agree with them, the visitors might increase but there is little evidence that leads increase. And the whole social media thing has fizzled away, there is lots of evidence that most SM activity is of no value.

I wasn't looking at debating strategies and stats as there is evidence on both sides to counter the argument.

Social media has not fizzled away and is an essential part of building an internet presence. The evidence that it SM is of no value is driven by businesses and so called experts not knowing how to build it into their marketing strategy.

Do you have a better phrase to describe an internet presence?

People keep pushing the sm thing but very few can point to evidence that does any good.

As an example. Suppose you post on Facebook. Because people follow more and more brands, events and so on their feed gets clogged up with more things to ignore. Facebook has already published documents saying they now filter feeds so the chances of your post getting seen and shared reduce. I work with someone who was the marketing manager for an international brand. They has over 3million FB followers. They closed the account and discovered it made no difference to their sales.

Internet presence is pretty good, but otherwise digital presence could be used, and is perhaps a wider term.

Thanks for the feedback and as an industry we expect people to understand the terms we use.

I am not sure someone using Instagram on their mobile would understand that this is one element of their internet presence. Maybe an online profile would be a better phrase.

Rather than define a term why not just call it part of a marketing strategy.

The four things you list are limited. Missing are online advertising and engagement. And email also has it's place as does forum posting. Some also do well with YouTube channels and even commenting on news feeds can work. But it's all just marketing.

The marketing debate is in another thread and everyone has their own idea of what marketing means, which is why I want to stay clear of it.

Online is a small part of marketing and my list was an indicator. When I speak to business who are not into technology they don't get it, which is why they need a phrase they can relate to.

But why do you need a phrase at all? When you speak to a business and identify their aims all you then need to do is offer a range of marketing options some of which will be online. So if you need anything at all just call it online marketing.

I'm not sure most people see websites as an online shop front. In many case they dint even know why they have a website except in some vague idea that it's something they need. I'm working with a client at the moment that felt they needed an ecommerce website because they take online bookings. Their marketing strategy consists of Facebook postings. There isn't a simple term anyone could use that this person (and many others) would understand. Many don't even understand basic marketing.

I totally agree most businesses don't understand the basics of marketing or what they should do online.

Everyone knows what a shop is, and the people I speak to understand the concept of their website being an online shop for their business so they can be found online. Then they get confused with all the other stuff.

I will keep searching for the holy grail of a collective phrase :)

Consumers and retailers are bamboozled by so many fancy terms nowadays it's not surprised they're confused. The marketing folk sure do like their buzzwords and phrases. :D There's four of many in you business signature on here alone. Keep it simple. People understand what "promotion" is, what advertising is, etc. One of my own favourite phrases is "don't try to re-invent the wheel"
