Is it worth moving to business premises?

yes you said that - an example would be nice by about now!

An example of what? A business that is expanding? Okay, mine. A business that can benefit from non essential costs? An office away from home for someone who finds that a dedicated place of work helps them escape the distractions and temptation to procrastinate at home and focuses their mind on being productive as I said before.

My business has always benefited from this, attempting to save money, not waste money, or not spend money necessarily is not my priority, not by far.

Generating business and making money, rather than focusing on saving it, works for me. I simply except their will be wastage. Plus looking for and thinking about ways to expand and make more money, is far more productive and fun than trying to save money.

but, do you deliberatly spend over the odds. Do you ring the leccy board up and offer them more than the bill was.

Have you added up all the costs?

    Heating and lighting
    Line rental and broadband
    Equipment
    Furniture and fittings
    travel and transport
And all the other stuff I haven't thought of yet

Plus the rent goes up after a year? And it's less flexible.

Do you have space in your home to make a decent office?

The idea of a virtual office would a) mean we don't have our home address on our website and b) as that would be our 'advertised address' there'll be no attention drawn to the house (either by the landlady or anyone else).

Missing the point sir, a virtual office doesn't mean your not running the business from home in any way shape or form. If your landlady says "no" I would personally respect that, and then you have the answer you came here looking for - yes you should rent a B&M office.

Oh, don't be put off by whoever said here that the rent would go up after a year, this would all in the negotiations and it's pretty rare for a rent rise until year three or five :)

It depends on what type your clients are. The reason for establishing a formal office is the customer meeting schedule, i.e. it's best to welcome them in your office. However if your clients are ones referred by your friends you might very well meet them somewhere else, in a cafe for example. The office is good option for inviting unfamiliar customers and try to impress them by the professional atmosphere of your work environment. It all goes down to image.

    Ive just replied to another thread a little like this;
We work from home and use a virtual office for call handing (receiving and sending out our engineers) and for mailing and address. We are now a nationwide business and our customers are happy with our B1 City Centre "Head office address" even though we live miles away! (Our post is sent to us daily by email).
We've been using Roweford Associates services for a while now and never had any problems! We have been praised for good customer service even though we dont have any actual call handling staff! Image does matter, but doesnt need to be a physical office if you dont actually need it! You will be paying additional bills that you dont need when you are a small business. Roweford helped me when I needed advice on running a small business so it might be worth contacting them.
