iPhone 5: What do you think?

Not as good as I expected tbh. Still, the battery life is pretty bad. 10 hours of wifi browsing isn't that much. With a phone that can do so much, a big battery life is something you'd expect them to have got right.

Still an 8mp camera too.

Also, having your iPhone on 4G is probably going to be very expensive!

Saying all that, I'd still love one! (If I didn't have to pay for it, obviously).

I'm amazed that it hasn't got features that are now standard on other phones such as wireless charging and NFC.

I see many comments like "disappointed" and "outdated" and lots of comments like this

"Nokia Lumia 920 never looked so good right now"

I missed the webcast yesterday but upon reading the official press release, I'm still very happy with my iPhone 4s. The new features are simply not enough reason to grab one at the moment.

Agree with wireless charging - as always Apple seems to add features in installments. Will it be long until we hear of an iPhone 5s?

so if anyone dares to suggest that the Nokia is better than an iPhone, they are instantly accused of being employed by Nokia... no, I'm not.

I've been using Windows Phone 7 (HTC Trophy) since the day it was launched and I've been singing it's praises all that time. I'm also not employed by Microsoft. Then I changed to a Nokia Lumia 900 on the day it was launched and now I'm singing the praises of that and especially looking forward to getting the new Lumia 920.

I don't see any wow factor with the iPhone 5. with the Nokia Lumia 920 it has the best camera by far with PureView, wireless charging and NFC as well as a fantastic screen, modern UI, free sat nav, free music, Office, xbox games... the list goes on.

In my opinion the iPhone is outdated in comparison.

Regardless, people will buy it as it's a new iphone...

That said, it's been mentioned its not worth an upgrade from the 4S to 5 but it is worth upgrading from a 3/3s. Similar thing happened with the new Samsung - don't upgrade from the 2 but do if you have the orginal galaxy S.

Personally I don't get the whole Apple scenario, sure they're pretty and work well but they incite such emotion from the users! It's a frickin phone!

With regard to the question 'Does having the latest iphone help my business?' the answer is most certainly not more than having any other smartphone. Now if it could make an icoffee and pay the iAccounts and find new iCustomers I'd say yes...

Wireless charging is standard?? Its on one phone AFAIK?

That said I do agree that the iphone5 isnt enough of a leap. I suspected the screen size would not increase significantly and even as an Apple fanbois I'd rather go the S3 route.

The lumia does look a good phone but I would wait and see what the app ecosystem is like.

I think they look good. Never liked the glass back of the 4/4S. We had signal issues with the 4, (so kept one for tech support guys, and returned the rest). Ignoring the awesome iOS6. The iPhone 5's taller screen, metal design and 4G are main attractions.

I've emailed our Apple Business contact to see if they can pre-order a couple tomorrow for us, so will wait and see if it's as good as it looks in sunny San Fran. Will then wait and see how 4G is rolled out before equipping the others.

In terms of latest iphone helping business?

It certainly does for us. We use iPhones, iPads and Macbook Pros extensively as part of our technical support and network maintenance. Also host thousands of Mac/iPad/iPhone users so its good to have the latest Apple kit in the office to help provide decent support.

What's your own views? Are you buying one?

Unsurprising, a let down and a sign of things to come.

TBH I think they have run out of ideas and steam. After the hype surrounding the 4s I made the change to an Android and never looked back. There is absolutely nothing shattering or ground breaking that would make me switch back and I think it would only be the Apple fans out there that will upgrade because as mentioned earlier, It's from Apple and it's new"

I'm pretty underwhelmed to be honest.

For me the iPhones have lost their charm and although they are excellent phones the poor battery life, appalling signal (even on the 4s) and hit and miss apps (will they or won't they crash every 5 mins??), no way of getting a refund when the apps fail to work as described (unlike Android where you can get a refund within 15 mins) have left me increasingly frustrated with them. I'm also bored of the interface and feel like all the iphones i've had have been the same phone with a different cover.

I think i'll be looking at a windows phone or android device next and leave iPhones for a few years.

There is absolutely nothing offered by the iPhone 5 that makes it a compelling purchase or even a useful one, I don't think Iphones are aimed at the business market, more a consumer item. I wont be getting one but ill probably have to buy my partner one v.soon as her crapple 4S is starting to play up, even though it is only 15 months old.

although not quite the answer to your last question, I do think though having the latest phones can help your business in many ways.

Who saw the bit where one of them said ' The average user uses 100 apps ' or something like that. I reckon that's the amount of apps the average person downloads, not uses. I have an iPod touch with about 6/7 pages and I only use one or two apps.

for new users maybe good, but what about all the people who have bought previous phones and accessories and docks and now they changed the charging part so all the old docks including Bang & Oulfson will be redundant,

What if you have a Ipod and a Iphone 5 you need 2 docks, I dont know as I don't do apple but is this correct what I am saying or not ?

Ahh thats good then, so long as it does not stick out, lol, which I am sure it wont, thanks for clearing that up, was waiting for a deluge on ebay of docking stations

Apologies if I'm missing something here...

For the wireless charging, you lie the phone on a dock and it starts charging the battery? Surely the dock itself has to be plugged in to the mains and, if so, is it really any different to putting the iPhone in to it's dock to charge?

For the record, I have an iPhone 4S but feel no need at all to upgrade to the 5...

I think you can get an adapter to use with existing accessories when launch. It going to cost around £25.

Been on iPhone since the 2nd generation, now on iPhone 4, could justify spending extra on 4s as it did not impress me. Come to think of it, didn't upgrade from iPhone 3G to GS. From what I read on iPhone 5, I don't see any groundbreaking idea. Nah, don't think it is worth it. I think the previous thread is right ... Apple has run out of idea. Time to look at windows phone I think.

to be honest see nothing to get me to rush out to buy one.

I have the iphone 4s. To be honest i think i mentioned in another post, its changed the way i do things. BUT the only two things which i would buy the phone for would be
Longer battery life (the 5 is still the same)
Wireless charging (which until now i did not think existed!) gets out of broom cupboard now.

I'm in no rush to get one, but when my contract runs out in December I'll be getting one, it's a nice upgrade from my iPhone 4.
I don't see the point of wireless charging either, the base station has to be plugged in, so you might as well plug the phone in.

Per ordering one tomorrow. It looks great and is better than my 4S. Upgrade will only be £150 or so so why not!

with wireless charging, you'll be able to charge your phone while you're out and about, drinking latte in a coffee shop or waiting for a flight, or at a friend's house, without having to take a charger with you. you just place your phone on a cushion or pillow or arm-rest or similar, you don't need to plug it in to anything. also around your house you'll be able to place your phone on or near a pillow or cushion or similar and it will automatically start charging without having to physically plug it in to anything. also you can charge multiple devices at the same time on the same arm-rest or pillow etc.

Nokia have partnered with Virgin Atlantic and a coffee chain to start rolling this out.

The device still has to be placed on top of the wireless charger! Therefore you may as well pick the plug up and plug it in. Gimmick in my opinion. Who's gonna go leave their phone on top of a charger in a restaurant whilst you have a meal? Just charge it up when you go to bed.

Then this should be a solution to iPhone crap battery life. It's a no brainier, why on earth they didn't include it, ah almost forgotten, something they save for 5s. Otherwise they will not have anything to offer!

the charger is probably the arm-rest or built-in to the table itself. you don't have to leave the phone anywhere that you wouldn't already be leaving it. you just place it on the arm of the chair or on the table and it automatically charges.

Assuming of course that my friend has powered sofas, cushions and pillows obviously. Wireless charging has a range of about 4cm max if I remember right, so it'd have to be placed on a charging station anyway, you might as well put it into a dock.
It's not like it'll charge automatically while I'm out and about, it has to be placed on a charging station in a place that has them, and as only 1 phone has it at the moment it's gonna be a few years before it's widespread enough for me to be interested.
How many times do you go to the airport? It's quite rare for me, a special occasion even, like a holiday. I make sure my phone is charged overnight before I leave the house.

In Japan, wireless charging took off about nine months ago. In no time at all, wireless charging was on more than two million devices, with mobile apps to help people find bars, cafes, restaurants, supermarkets, nail bars etc that make chargers available.

The key point is that you don't have to plug it in. There are lots of different shaped chargers for each phone, so they can't really supply each different charger. Also, chargers are fairly bulky so you can't really stick it in your pocket without it sticking out. The wireless charging thing means that any (wireless charging enabled) phone can be charged without the need to bring the charger along.

I use a nokia lumia 800 and has been a perfect phone for me. battery life is not great but then this is standard for a lot of smartphones. My old nokia E55 would still be performing after 4/5 days without a recharge! A lot of my friends jumped on the apple bandwagon without even researching what else is out there ~ am not disputing the iphone is good but there are alternatives that are not as expensive and give it a good run for its money

Have you guys been carrying around a charger with you for all these years?
Probably not.

So why the sudden fascination of being able to charge while out and about? Why is it all of a sudden a must-have?

At the moment it's a gimmick, when wireless charging tech has evolved it will be very useful, people are working on wireless power at the moment that will power a whole roomful of electronics, THAT is impressive, last I read it was only about 10% efficient, but that will improve.

The wireless charging you guys have been banging on about has been around for years, it's not a new thing.

I use a power monkey to charge on the go. has been a godsend when am close to running out and need to use phone and miles from home

I have an iphone 4 and I'm quite happy to stick with it until my contract end in June. I would definitely not consider anything else aside from an iphone which at that point would be an iphone 5.

The fact is that my iphone 4 will still be worth £200 plus when upgrade time comes. All your Lumia's , HTC's, etc are going to be nothing but cheap landfill after 2 years.

The evolutionary nature of iphone upgrades is also a great way of keep doing what works and at the same time not alienating users of earlier iphones and losing them as customers.

Yeah to be honest I upgrade every year when a new model comes out and it only costs me about £150 when you take into account what yu get for your old iPhone.

Also someone said you don't have to take a charger with you for wireless charging........surely you would.....you'd have to take a wireless charger with you. Which is even bigger than a standard phone charger.

Unless your meaning that restaurants, pubs, train stations?...etc could have wireless charging pads in them? If that's the case......could restaurants, pubs, train stations not just provide plug in chargers? In reality wireless charging actually only eradicates the need to take hold of the plug and physically push it in to the phone. You still need a charger or need to go somewhere where there's a charger.

No, because there are so many different types for different phones. Then they have to stop them from getting tangled, broken, stolen etc. (From what I understand,) With wireless charging you only need to provide a pad which the phone can rest on. That could easily be built into an arm rest or table.

That's because you're paying more each month for your contract, iPhones tend to cost at least £10 per month more for the same tariff. We have Android phones, mainly Galaxy S2 phones, we pay £30 per month per handset and get 1200 minutes, 5,000 texts and 1 Gb of data per month, had we gone with iPhone on the same tariff we would have had to pay £49 upfront for each handset and £46 per month. Most of our mobile contracts are up for renew in the next few weeks - we have already been offered over £100 for each Galaxy S2 handset we trade in!

The iPhone is more about vanity than substance!
