Indication of costs

I have in mind a list of 5-6 small press specialist magazines (all very similar) where I'd like to get some exposure for my new project 'Hippy at Heart'. So I'm guessing I'll be needing a Press Release? I'll also want some exposure in the local rag - I'm guessing I'll be needing a different press release for this tailored for the different readership?

What sort of costs am I looking at to get a PR bod to sort this for me? I appreciate no-one is going to give me a concrete quote - I'm just looking for a rough ballpark figure (£5, £50, £500, £5000??) so that I can budget accordlingly.

cheers

(should mention, at the moment this is just a general fact-finding enquiry - I'm not yet in a position to order.)

You know you can get local rag PR as easy as falling off a log and don't need a professional. Just give 'em a bell and they will love to talk to someone with something relevant and local.

The specialist mags are the same. You can pay a PR person what you like, but there's no way they will know all there is to know about your business or have the passion for it you do.

If you know the publications and they are truly specialist it will be worth you just buying the magazine, pinpointing who it is that writes about what you want to say and speak to them - they are humans and don't bite.

And yes, you need to tailor your info/release. What flys in the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald won't get you into a national magazine. But sometime national papers pick up stories from provincial papers if they are interesting enough so it's worth getting in there.

I wonder if you have my problem, however, and that is identifying what it is about your business that is truly newsworthy. I can't help you with that, unless you stage a ridiculous stunt like making a world record whoopee cushion.

Hi Boo

You might want to talk to Paula Gardner at Do Your Own PR http://www.doyourownpr.com - she is really helpful for small businesses. I am currently reading her workbook called Get Noticed which takes you through a 30 day PR strategy and is packed with info & imaginative ideas on promotion including a section on press releases. http://www.doyourownpr.com/products/the_get_noticed_workbbok.asp .
(I know this sounds like a mega plug for Paula - I'm not an affiliate! I've just found her tools and approach very useful myself).

She does emphasise the importance of really tailoring your press release to each publication, devouring back editions, getting to know the language they use, targeting their readers' interests/ points of reference, taking time to build good relationships with journalists, how to communicate your WOW factor etc.

Someone also posted a "top tips for writing knock out press releases" on our site - - you can view the link here: http://affinitytrading.com/forum/viewtopic.php?forum=2&showtopic=39&fromblock=yes

Good Luck

Jo
