Hi all,

The industry that I'm in is becoming increasingly competitive, so to keep my prices competitive, I considering importing from abroad, specifically India and China as this is where all my suppliers currently source the products I'm interested in.

I have contacted a few potential suppliers and I could make some real savings by importing stock. So other than the cost of goods what other potential costs should I keep in mind?

Also, typically, what would be the (approximate) cost of shipping from mainland China or India to the UK?

Hopefully this thread will be useful for myself and others who are considering importing their products. Any advice and comments from people with experience in importing will be appreciated!

It really is a how long is a piece of string, it will heavily depend on how much at one time, and more importantly the size of the products, cost of shipping on my products can range form 2-3% of the invoice value to 30%+ One items would be small and heaqvy the others are big volume low weight, I can fill a 40ft hi cube for $12000 or less!

You wil have import duty and port clearance costs then UK delivery, plus VAT up front.

There are freight forwarders on this board who I am sure will help out some more.

Hi HandH,

In order to properly quantify and cost shipping charges, you will need to give an indication of the weight / volume (cybic meters) of the goods you intend to import (assuming you will only import part container loads.

If you intedn to import full containers, you would need to give city / province of supplier in India / China as costs can vary depending on the port of loading for seafreight.

In respect of the UK side, would need to know where goods are to be delivered, as this will effect your choice of carrier and delivery cost.

If you are based in the South / South West of the UK, then you would ship your goods to Southampton.

If you are East / North East UK, then you would ship to Felixstowe.

For London and surrounding area you would ship to Thamesport / Tilbury as UK delivery woul be cheaper.

If you can provide a little more information, can give you a clearer idea of the likely costs you will need to take into account.

Absolutely it is the safe way to contact your local shipping service to arrange the goods delivery. When you appoint the shippment company, what you need to do is ask the factory or supplier to contact the shippment company and they will deal with the shippment issues. Many companies carry out international cargo delivery in UK in charge of the shippment between Asia and UK. It's not a big deal.

that's depends the goods, if your goods CBM less than one container, the price will be different from different agents. If buy expensive product such as MID PADs, Flash Cards. Delivery by air may can save more cost for you as you can get goods within one week but not more than one month
