I will be travelling to Paris on Thursday to pick up 3 antique rings (bought at autction) which I am expected to pay 5% import VAT on in order to qualify for the margin scheme.
I am going on Eurostar. What do I have to do when I bring them back? And which amount is the 5% due on? The total cost of the item, the hammer price?

I believe it is the total price paid, inc commissions, but lets see if the import specialists can add something.

    Hi
Imports of works of art, antiques and collectors’ items are taxed on a reduced value at importation, giving an effective VAT rate of 5 per cent, I am not permitted to post a link but look up ‘ how to value goods for import vat’ on the .Gov website

Do not include the buyer’s premium when working out the value for import VAT purposes for:
    • works of art
    • antiques
There are quite strict conditions on what constitutes antique though.

In terms of the import you can make a simplified declaration on line or make what is known as an oral declaration to a customs officer in the red channel or red point phone on arrival into the UK. I don’t know what is exactly the set up on Eurostar.
again on the . Gov website look up either ‘bringing commercial goods into GB‘ or ‘bringing personal goods into GB ‘.
