I am new this forum. The reason I joined this Forum is to do home work for importing different types of good to UK.

Originally from India and now based at UK from last 8 years. I am good in sales and interested to try few products until I get the RIGHT products.

I have few ideas like importing candles, Party hats, Fresh Rose Flowers, Printed papers.

Can i try these ideas as a Sole Trader and later on get the other docs like Company Registration, VAT, Import docs.

I am particular interested to talk with Indian Exporters and advisor on this forum

You can be a sole trader and import.

Remember that, unless the item is unique or hard to find, unless you buy volume, you may not get any major competitive advantage.

Thanks Handy and Consultant for your inputs.

Handy LED seems to be in demand. In this Christmas many people are decorating with LED. Not sure about ROD LED I have to contact wholesalers or retailers

My idea is to make small but quick money to get the experience and confidence to go into high volume. I believe in baby steps.

What you think importing Red Roses for Valentine is a good idea or not? I can sell to small retailers and also put up a small counter in shopping centre.

Andy,Rod LED is not suitable for Christmas, I think. It's specially for wardrobe.

Red Roses always make profit in Valentine's Day.
But as many competitor there, you'd better make some specially idea on the Rose.
Such as style packing, shade design, passion feeling ,that may make retailers interested.

I have opportunity to export to UK, hazelnuts, quantity 30 to 60 tons year, more is possible too, if functional trade business develops. i have basic information regarding import duty and taxation, although going to need consultant or partner which would be uk based to assist in solutions; to reach market, wholesale buyers, farmers, confectionery producing companies etc. and clearing from uk customs. competitive price guaranteed and profit share negotiable.
I will appreciate valuable clues and adequate contacts.

Hi Aleko

I may not be able to help you right now - but I am interested in making contact because I want to build up a network of importers and distributors of nuts into the UK over the next two years with a view to setting up an import and distribution business. If there is any way I can help you here in the UK - free of charge so I can learn more about this potential market place - I would be more than happy to help.

Just for your information I own and run a company in an entirely different sector - in Tech - vyoo.eu - and it is my intention to run this new business alongside and the current.

best wishes

I have no personal experience with this, however a friend of mine that deals in scooters had a bash at this kind of thing. You need to be uber vigilant when making your projections, ensure you speak to someone you trust that has real experience of trading with these markets. I'm not saying there is anything sinister or anything, just make sure you get the full low down on ALL associated taxes.

Best of luck

I see a lot of indefinite material in this thread. Perhaps it is time to provide some detailed information.

Andy has already received contacts from random suppliers, but I suggest a more orderly process would be his best approach.

1. Thoroughly research products to sell. Don't just start of thinking "I could probably sell product type .....", and also, don't just look for best selling items on eBay etc., because you will have a huge amount of competition.
2. To think of suitable products, one of the suggestions I make in my book is to look at your own work experience and that of friends, and also your hobbies and theirs. What items are used frequently in those areas? Are any of them difficult to locate? Are prices excessive? Is delivery always slow? The answers to these questions may find you a niche product.
3. Find out prices paid for those items.
4. Carefully search for suppliers. This is where you need help, because you will be offered those products by a multitude of people. Are they trustworthy? Many web portals where you can find suppliers do not properly verify suppliers even though they say they do.
5. Make sure you get the best price for a small initial order. Despite what I read on some forums, haggling is not the best way to go. I am speaking from my experience dealing in China since 1978, first as an exporter, and then from 1987 as an importer.
6. If using the supplier's couriers, ensure that quotes from suppliers include all door to door costs. Never accept pay on delivery courier arrangements.
7. Don't attempt Customs clearance yourself at least until you have some experience, and even then I would not do it myself, and I have been in the industry for a long time, although now retired.

I hope this helps not only Andy, but others. PM me if you like.

Hi Andy,

I think you may be starting at the wrong end. You need first of all to do your research on the products you think you can sell. Make sure you know the market very well. Become an expert, so that you know all you need to know about quality, prices, usual order quantities, packaging, and also where you can sell the products.

Assuming you have also obtained the right answers to your business questions about sole trading, VAT, etc., you can then move on to the importing side of the matter.

Once you are sure that you have all these matters sorted, you will find it very easy to locate suppliers. In fact, you may find it too easy. By this I mean that once your requirements become known you will receive offers from people about whom you know nothing.

If you simply search Google, and sourcing sites, you will find many suppliers, but you still have the same problem. How do you know if they are reliable? Unless you have trusted relatives in India, you will need to go through some official channels to find suppliers. I often have to advise my book readers on that subject.

I am suggesting caution in the matter of finding suppliers. Once you find one that you are confident is reliable, you should only place a small order at first. Even that is not fail safe. I have had the experience of buying a sample from India, only to find that the volume production was not of the same quality.

Fortunately I had a business acquaintance visiting India frequently, and he was able to do the quality checking for me, I did not continue with the order and only lost the small amount that I had paid for the sample.

Some of the posts on this thread are typical of the many unhelpful or opportunistic posts that tend to cloud the issue.

Andy and other users of the forum would be well advised to see them for what they are. Anyone who expresses interest in importing will receive large numbers of offers, many of them irrelevant to their expressed interest.

Some of those offers may be tempting, but stop and think for a moment. How often would you be likely to buy on the spur of the moment from a door to door salesman?

Step back, focus your mind on what you are trying to achieve, and don't be distracted by the great offers. Do your product research first. Once you have decided upon a product or product type that you know something about - preferably that you know a lot about, check out its marketability and its likely selling price, and then start looking for the product.

Do your own sourcing, taking great care to first do some checking on the sourcing sites you want to use. ripoffreport.com is a good starting point, but even if you just look for site reviews you may find complaint reports.

If you find a safe site (good luck!) do not rely on their declaration that the suppliers are "verified". The verification process on some B2B web portals is only cursory to say the least. In worst cases the verification amounts to ensuring that their payment for listing is processed.

I teach that there is a lot more to importing than just finding reliable suppliers. Not that importing needs to be complicated, but there are many issues that a newcomer needs to address, and the information is unlikely to be found on forum posts.

Hi,
I'm new on this forum and I'm looking for answers. I'm the owner of a wine shop and I want to import wines from Serbia & Montenegro, non EU country. I tried to call to HMRC but they helped me just with commodity codes for white/red wines. Is anyone here, who can tell me, what taxes I have to pay when wine is in UK? I found the duty tax 13.10 euros / 100 L and VAT. Do I need a import licenses? I want to import 30 pallets (21600 bottles). Thank you.
