What is the best image size to upload on a website
Depends on how you are using the images. 1600px will cover most screens. But if your theme width is smaller you upload smaller images. But compress first and if possible convert to webp.

The classic mistake is to use large, uncompressed images for (say) product pages, then resize them to thumbnail size for a category page (many small images on the same page).

Whatever the screen size, the browser downloads the 'large' image then re-sizes it. If your category page has lots of images you're into Sammy Snail territory.

Wordpress will generate a range of sizes when you upload to the media library. You then choose which one to use when you add to a post/page. One of the options is ‘full size’. This is the image you uploaded. The maximum size of this should be the width of your theme.

Some themes and plugins add additional image sizes. Woo commerce for example adds 600px product image size. You can also add optimisation plugins like smushit. But it’s better to do all the prep work before uploading.
