Ive noticed all my details are being shown on whois and im already getting emails from places which is worrying me, ive contacted whois but they haven't got back to me yet! Is there anyway i can temporarily take my details down im probably going to terminate my contract with them i just want to be sure my details will be gone on whois after that and i might move over to another domain host.

You have to opt out of your details appearing in the whois records. I think 1and1 charge for this service.

However....

You can only opt out if you are a nontrading individual. If you are running a business your details have to be visible.

Ok thankyou both. It is because i have signed up with a .com domain name then. But it did mislead me signing up into thinking i could hide my details, not very happy but going to terminate the account. Im getting spam in my emails now and worried what hands my details might get into now!

Thankyou for your help.

The spam isn't necessarily via the whois database. There are all sorts of ways they could have got your details. Avoid 1and1 for everything. Don't even use them as a registrar. And if you are targeting the UK use a .co.uk rather than a .com.

They have an appling reputation. I have a load of clients who have got fedup with their poor support and awful website builder. Escape now before you get suckered into spending money on simple features that most hosts provide for free.

If you are using blogger for your blog you don't need hosting. If you want a standalone site using wordpress or whatever vidahost do a pretty good deal.

If you have registered your domain with 1and1 they will only close your account if you transfer the domain to another registrar.

Can you PM me you site details and I can better advise on what you need to do.

What have you cancelled? If you haven't done this properly you could lose the domain name. If it's registered with 1and1 and you close your account you won't be able to move it to another registrar.

The domain and the contract. Im ok with it i set up this one a bit hastey and decided to go with .com but realising i probably should have gone with .co.uk so i went to 123reg and got a domain with it and privacy. But in mean time been deciding if i want the .com for now (whilst i decided what is best for my site) and i definately dont if its displaying my details online. I just hope the cancellation process is complete and not dragged out or ignored, im reading some bad reviews and cancelling!

Hi Gemima,

Welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear the trouble you're having with 1&1.

I wouldn't have rushed to 123-Reg either to be honest, as they charge £4.99 for WhoIs opt out whilst most providers provide this for free.

If you cancel your .com then you'll likely lose the domain and still have paid for it.
You can transfer it to another registrar that can provide privacy, but most will charge for privacy on non .uk domains (privacy vs whois opt out).
You won't be able to transfer your domain away for another 60 days though I'm afraid:
https://www.icann.org/resources/pages/name-holder-faqs-2012-02-25-en

So you may be better off paying 1&1 for domain privacy if you can't get your domain cancelled quickly and/or if you want to keep your .com domain.

Normally it's a good idea owning both the .com and the .co.uk domain.

Best of luck,

Dan

OK, then you need to talk to 123reg about the privacy thing. Closing your 1and1 account won't hide the details.

So knowing what little I do about your situation I'd recommend:

1. Keep your .com domain with 1&1 and pay them for privacy if this is a concern. You can transfer your domain to another provider in 60 days if you like.

2. Transfer your .co.uk domain to another provider that doesn't charge for WhoIs opt out. Any web host or other registrar should be fine for this. You can do this imediately by requesting an IPS Tag change, and can then enable WhoIs opt out without having to pay for it.

If you we can be of any help then feel free to get in touch.

By the looks of things they dont offer you to pay for domain privacy, i read somwhere it came free with a domain so you can understand why im annoyed. Yes i thought having both domains would be a good idea. There is a 30 day trial so i shouldn't have to be charged anything! We will see what happens. Thanks.

The domain is now registered and your details are publically avaialable. Closing the 1and1 account won't change this.

if you want to hide your .com details you need to pay a third party privacy provider.

Thank you for contacting us.

As checked your account is already cancelled. However you can still access the control panel to update the contact details for the domain.com. You can use alternative contact details since there is no option to hide the contact details for a .com domain and we apologize for this. You may refer to the link below how to update the domain's contact details: (cant post links yet)

Note: Though you already cancel your account however the domain name domain.com will still be viewable in WHOIS until it reaches the expiration date 12-jun-2016. Thank you.

If you wish to speak to a representative about your concern, please reply to this email and indicate the phone number, the time and date you would prefer for us to contact you, and the name of the person we need to look for if you would prefer to have us speak to one of your representatives instead. You can also give us a call anytime at...

Does this mean i can edit the details into whatever i like?Maybe use their address details etc? (see bold text)

Yes you can but that would then mean you can't use the domain name. If you publish incorrect information and get found out you could get your site taken down and even fined. Now I admit this is unlikely if you are just using blogger for your blog but it is a possibility.

Sorry another question when they said the following "

When you normally cancel a domain name (on other domain hosts) does it do the same process that you can only change things once its expired? Are they not allowing me to completely cancel everything? Is this normal?

There is actually a grace period where .com the domain can still be deleted in the registry after registering it. The grace period as far as I'm aware is up to 5 days from when you registered it. I work in domain name and hosting service industry. The system we use allows us to delete a newly registered domain by using the "Domain refund" option. If the domain is still within 5 days when it was registered and customer contacted us they mispelled it or they changed their mind and want to register another domain or for whatever reasons they may have as long as it is within the 5 day window we can completely delete the domain in the system.

My post may be already late for you but just in case similar thing happens to you. You can ask other domain registrars if they can still cancel/delete a newly registered domain.

This is not a common practice though and the registrar may no longer refund the amount you paid for the domain as domain registration fee is non-refundable. You can request to change the domain name into something different if you want to. But asking for refund may not be possible.
