6 months ago I registered a new domain and paid for hosting, a friend said he would build me a basic Wordpress site for free and finally I cornered him this weekend to find out he's done no work at all.

All I need is a basic site where I can learn how to update via Wordpress (I have a WP login & blog if this helps) and maintain my own site.

I'm happy to pay for this, or course, and there's no massive rush to get it up but sometime before Christmas 2011 would be appreciated. I have some content on my blogs that I can provide and a couple of images if required.

Please DM me if you can help thank you.

Knowing the basics of html is easy (adding text and images) but building a whole site takes a lot more knowledge..

thanks for the recommendation (cheque is in the post :D)

My SEO skills evolved from decades in sales and marketing, just that in all of this I have never had any exposure to an environment where sites are built, only maintained.

I have Dreamweaver at home and created all the HTML but ran into a brick wall loading the pages / site / everything. I had to stop otherwise I would have bust a blood vessel in frustration.

<nooffence>I decided to pay for someone's help and learn that way would help me understand.</nooffence>

Sometimes it is better to choose the overall solution before the hosting, because the hosting might not be appropriate for the final solution.

If you have a .co.uk domain, have you considered using the hosted wordpress service wordpress.com? With this service, run by the Wordpress developers, wordpress is preconfigured with some useful add-ons, and you can select different templates. Just point your domain at the wordpress site (wordpress provide instructions on how to do this)

You pay around $10 per year to have it hosted under your own domain name. This is what I've done with a demo/test website of mine (this website demos the non-blog side of wordpress, but obviously you could use Wordpress in its normal blogging mode too).

Without paying more money out, wordpress.com isn't worth much as for a custom theme & domain you gotta pay for the privilage. It gets expensive so just easier to get your own hosting and set up yourself (using fantastico etc).

It takes the hosting situation away, but it gets expensive if you just don't want a bog standard site.

Wordpress should not be seen as a one-off initial setup. For a start that would be an initial default setup, whereas something more useful would require extra setup. And Wordpress is something you have to keep up-to-date with the latest releases for security purposes on an ongoing basis.

That is where the extra hosted managed service of Wordpress.com has the advantage for basic sites and basic users.

Even what I consider a good hosting company (unitedhosting) has just recommended wordpress.com on another thread on this forum.

It's so easy to updat wp though, it tells you in the admin panel when a new version is available :D The update takes seconds and hardly ever any issues with updating (cept some plugins might stop working - very rare tho)

@Faevilangel - Just can't find the right answer on Google

@Massey - I am positive you were born gifted

@awebapart.com - thank you for your continued input - I intend to upkeep Wordpress and welcome future changes so I can learn how to implement them. I do have basic HTML understanding and always looking to improve on that, as previously pointed out by Massey - SEOs should have HTML / site knowledge.

I also want to say thank you to everyone who has PMd me and who has left a message on this thread

Nina If you need a hand to get over wp, I will run through it with you, show you how to do everything including new static pages, new blog posts, adding plugins, editing pages and anything else you need.

Just give me a bell (number on website) and I will help you as much as I can.

I don't know how to upload to a domain, that's the thing.

I tried this with the pages / files I generated through Dreamweaver, I had to install some other software and change the file type and I spent hours trying to do it then finally my eyeballs exploded and my hair caught fire so I'm paying someone to do it for me.

    Thanks for the tip anyway.

if you need a basic 'brochure' website and familiar with basic word processing tools then i would suggest using the Mr Site software. You build your own site from templates, in a matter of days!

It starts at about £30 i think and no need to deal with web developers!!
