I have a Meeting with an Accountant Tomorrow

P

PhilGibson

Got a meeting tomorrow just a little stumped on exactly what I should wear.

I'm 16 years old and I want to show them I'm serious about everything, so I was thinking some posh, shiny shoes, black trousers, and a shirt.

My Dad said they probably wouldn't expect that and I should just go in casual jeans and a t-shirt but I think they won't take me as serious if I do this.

Would love your input on this situation.

Thanks a lot,
Phil Gibson

I wouldnt worry on it , you are there Customer they need to impress you , remember that !!!

Now common decency comes into play and so smart and casual would be the way ..

Remember accountants are ten a penny , if you don`t get on or they do not play ball and work for your best interests ,move along and find another ..

Anything that you wear that you are comfortable in and decent should be fine. If you normally wear jeans, then wear jeans. You need to be at ease in your dealings with them and not be worried about what you are wearing.
(Your age should not be a factor, by the way. You should be treated as an equal.)
I've met clients dressed in all sorts of work gear - and I wouldn't expect them to run home and change out into something else just to come and speak to me.

Many years ago I worked in a specialist agricultural practice and I still recall one lovely client, a pig farmer, who certainly didnt change his clothes to come into the office...for some reason no one liked doing his accounts. I still remember the smell of those invoices too now:eek::eek::)

LOL, there's always one :D;)

(It's funny how invoices always pick up aromas.
I have a client who must use lots of pot pourri, as her invoices always have a floral hint.
and engineering clients whose invoices have the scent of oil and machinery lubricant.)

Give it a few more years when paper is totally redundant and we'll miss this;):D

Wear what you feel most comfortable in. You need to be confident enough to have a discussion that suits your needs. You are not there for a job interview. It's your business the accountant will be supporting.

If you feel that you would be taken more seriously and generally feel more confident and business like in a shirt and tie then wear that as anything that helps you feel on a level would be good in my opinion.

You're lucky. I remember a succession of truly vile smelling client records. I think the worst was where the client's cat must have been using the box of invoices as a litter tray - all the paperwork was stained and smelled of cat wee! My hands were red raw that week as I had to wash them so much to get rid of the smell. That was the trouble with being a wage slave employee - we had to put up with all the carp. Far better now I've my own practice as I simply wouldn't tolerate a client doing that now - they'd be given the box back and told to go elsewhere!

Other unpleasant smells come from chain smoking clients and takeaways/restaurants which seem to pick up vile cooking smells.

Have to agree ver well said the accountant is there to get your business and help and support you not the other way round.

I have done the accounts of some farms in my time and the worst was having to actually go out there and spend a couple days at the farm, lets just say my suit need to be fumigated after being there:eek:

the cat wee does take the biscuit i dont evny you one bit:D:D

It doesn't matter what you wear as long as you remember to wear one very important thing in your face; a smile. Don't forget to smile appropriately and make them feel welcome to you other than as just another accountant... Pay attention to them and for the best impression, the second you see them ask them their names and tell them your's if they don't know and most important, DON'T FORGET IT and tell them it was a pleasure, thanks for coming (their name here)! Finally, talk to them in terms of what they want not what you want because the only reason they're there is for what will benefit them not you...
Remember: Smile, their name, and their interests not yours.
