Shifting to Https has nothing to do with Google rank and many of the site owners and webmasters are immediately implemented this due to rumors. However this SSL certificate are for websites that has confidential files and transactions in which most of the people doesn't know.
For the cost involved, anyone serious about their website really should have an SSL installed.
SSL as a Ranking signal is not a rumour. It is confirmed by Google within their guidelines, and is a ranking signal. to quote Google from their Official Webmaster blog
anyone serious about their website really should have an SSL installed.
Has anyone seen an improvement in search traffic after installing an SSL certificate? I read that this can help but would like to know if there are any real world results.
Hi Scott
I'd say if you're 20th without SSL, you might get 19th/18th with.
I've seen http to https migrations some others have attempted as having a negative result.
Thank you, glad it's not just me.
I switched to HTTPS in September 2016 and within a week I had bombed from P1, pos 1 to Google page 2. Granted, I also swapped domain at the same time however I chose to reverse the HTTPS first before panicking and reverting back to my old domain.
Within 2 days my rankings started to recover and within 7-10 days all are back to P1, pos 1 again.
This was implemented with Cloudflare FYI.
Anyway, I may test again later this year and try HTTPS again, after all, a lot of my new clients are coming to me already with HTTPS and I feel a bit left out![]()
1 thing to note is that if you do this via Cloudflare then you are sharing your SSL cert with a number of other sites (they are not dedicated to you) and if one of those other sites has ranking issues then you could easily be lumped in with them (this has been documented, although it is rare).
Please can anyone post a link of a step by step guide to implementing SSL with Cloudflare or a different providor? Mine was carried out my a local host so I wasn't involved in the process and I wonder how easy it would be for me to learn?
I for one have not seen any major traffic boost after switching over to https. As a matter of fact, most of the sites that I have come across do not even have an SSL certificate integrated. The thing is do not trust what Google says and keep on testing different angles on your site.
