Also. Yellow is not a good colour choice. It’s is often seen as a caution or warning colour.

And UX/UI design is not easy. You are familiar with the site layout and know how it works. A first time visitor needs familiar signals to know what to do. This is especially important on a phone - the device 90% of your visitors will be using.

Just tried to add a pin. Got as far as step 3 and can’t remember my password. Clicked on the link and nothing happened. Which means I’m now stuck.

I did get an email with a verification code but I have no idea what to do with this.

I reloaded the site and tried to login. This time when I clicked forgot password the code field auto filled my email address. It didn’t tell me I had been sent a code.

When I did get logged in I added a pin without an image. Which means you show a placeholder on the event. There shouldn’t be anything.

Like I said in an earlier post, it’s fiddly on a phone. Maybe get some help with the UI/UX.

Now received two identical welcome emails. There were no T&C or options to disable messages. Isn’t even an accounts settings page.

And despite me adding my location, it defaults to Birmingham.

Ok. But you said to open the app. Which doesn’t make sense as they are already using the app.

If your marketing is right there is no need to have a long description as they will already know what to expect when they land on the site.
When I'm looking at apps, I read the blurb... I don't know what the app is in a sea of apps but if as you say there is a few million being spent on marketing then chances are I already know. Is that happening here?

You misunderstand me.

When you visit the website you will be looking at the landing page. It means you are already using pinswarm. There is no app to download.

You don't have to spend millions on marketing. For example, a social media campaign would promote the application so anyone following the link would know they are going to a site where they can enter events, offers etc.

The point I was making is, we were asked to review the site and I had no idea what it was for ( a vague idea perhaps) and couldn't navigate it to where I can find out. Marketing won't fix the lack of information. And has anyone heard of Pinswarm? Has it had a successful marketing campaign aside from asking for reviews here? The marketing didn't reach me.

First impressions are always invaluable and can't be recreated. So here is my 5 pence worth as a random web visitor landing for the first time.

Initially confusing, I didn't quite get the purpose, or why I was here. With no content in my area, you have the age-old problem of lack of content, which then makes it harder to understand the purpose, or motivate any action. Unless you have deep pockets, the fix here is scraping or partnerships, but you need data. Something like NextDoor might be a natural collaborator.

Thought I would add a pin. Echo others about the Yellow, take it from someone who has been using yellow for a long time, in the modern world, I'd think again, particularly buttons on a map backdrop. I think a blue would be warmer and clearer.

So I added a description for a pin, then automatically selected upload, as my eye was drawn to that as the next option. Once I realised it was for images, I cancelled that, then finally saw the continue in the yellow header. In my brain the continue option should have been at the bottom (or repeated at the bottom). Don't let people think, just make it idiot and old fart proof.

So I submitted a pin and it appears you published it straight away. So what moderation is going on? Are you relying on automated filtering and profanity filters etc? If so make sure you have a decent public media insurance policy!

I just did a test one, see below, but I hope you can't just add any old nastiness, hate, profanity or god forbid, let the kids start pratting around!

Nice idea, maybe rethink the colours and flow, but get lots of genuine impartial user feedback, don't steer them, then react to their honesty. I hate internet users, they always prove me wrong, use the site in a completely different way than I intended, and have a habit of finding lots of undocumented features o_O

Best of luck.

This is something I commented on in a previous post.

Allowing moderated user generated content, especially images, videos, etc. is risky.

Allowing stuff to be published without any monitoring is just asking for trouble.

You have to be very risk tolerant or have extremely deep pockets for legal fees to do things like this.

I’ve just added a NSFW pin with a very unsafe image and link to an adult site. The caption includes a number of banned words

Connecting businesses with their local audience is a valuable service, especially with the emphasis on supporting local businesses these days.

In terms of potential partners or people to reach out to, you might consider local business associations or chambers of commerce. They often have networks of small businesses that could benefit from your platform. Additionally, you could consider reaching out to local bloggers or influencers who specialize in promoting local businesses and events.

One suggestion I have is to make sure your platform is user-friendly and easy to navigate. People are more likely to use a platform that is intuitive and doesn't require a lot of effort to figure out. Also, consider incorporating social sharing features to encourage users to spread the word about the businesses they discover on PinSwarm.
Good luck with your platform and I hope this helps!

The intention is to show live special offers, upcoming events and the latest local social media content. It's similar to Google Maps yes.. but instead of static content, it is live daily content from businesses, community groups and local influencers.

People in local communities will hopefully one day be able to fire up the app, and see everything happening around them today.. live and fresh. A busker outside the shopping centre, a 2-for-1 offer at the pizza shop, a coffee morning at the Church hall, a Go-Pro from a mountain biker on the local hills....

Thanks for the feedback. I will consider how to make this more clear. Indeed.. it is a web app... like Google Maps, there is no homepage.. I hoped to make it so obvious that one isn't required :)

I totally get it and thing this a great idea. Why do I get it?…here’s why:

    As a user
    - I use google maps only as a navigation tool in full knowledge I can find a local business listing (using speech) and hit start directions. For anything else, it’s cluttered, clunky and the filters are beyond the average users capability especially on the move.
-if I want to look for things to do (often driven by offers) either with the family or friends, I’ll search Google also and be led to out of date ‘what’s on’ type sites with the obvious city attractions and empty events sections. Ok some are better than others, but there is no one place with everything that I know of or use.
    - your example of the busker landed the idea for me. Anyone can drop a pin and effectively share/invite everyone to come see (or buy). Fitness, roller dance groups, car enthusiast meets etc.

    As a developer
    - I like the way you land in the map and pinch screen, unless dropping a pin and typing your text, keep the UX as gamified as possible, zooming/swiping/taping only.
    - can you embed 3D models onto the map? (Just some permanent ones, landmarks etc - add a bit of visual identity to the cities). Obviously very low poly models I assume to not effect performance.
    - so populate with cool models and icons and make the events/offers/opportunities there’s an idea - networking) bigger and jump out.you could add all manor of cute little anims. Bit like snap chat
    - for super easy accessibility yes keep it in the browser..why the hell not. No need for hefty App Store fees and with open XR/web3 on the horizon, we’ll all be back the browsers soon enough!

    As a marketer
it’s a benefit it’s in a browser because at least there less commitment needed to ‘click and land’. But it will be within apps and social platforms you’ll need to focus to get your initial usage and then down the line you may well get the reward of organic ranking in search. It’s been a while since I ran any Facebook campaigns so am unsure how they let you target and engage their groups, but there and LinkedIn for some business events. You need to get the content on there and make it inviting.

Anyway out of time, love crunching this stuff.

Best of luck with it…great idea!

I can suggest that you reach out to potential partners or users through social media platforms or local business associations. You can also offer incentives or promotions to encourage businesses to try your platform and provide feedback. Good luck with your venture!
