Go to 'options' and click on the 'SEO' tab. Select 'Add links' and everyone who looks at your page will automatically link to your website.

It's quite straightforward to get backlinks from social network sites eg FaceBook, Twitter, Google+ (my favourite) but if you mean backlinks that count for Google Search etc that's not going to happen as those social network sites use the rel=nofollow attribute which tells search engines not to follow.

The best starting point is to increase your "following" numbers in the hope they then "follower" you back. Let's saying you are selling gardening tools, then log into your Twitter account and search on the words say "gardens" and you will get a list of Tweets that use the words "gardens" and you can selectively click on those as suitable and then subsequently click on that account as "following".

In time some will follow you so you need to keep an eye on that to follow those back - albeit you don't have to do this.

There are automated systems to do the above but we would highly recommended you do not use those (that's also a breach of Twitter ToS) and its best you manually build your natural 'following' and 'followers' over a period of time and that you make sure you send some interesting Tweets and likewise sometimes reply to your followers Tweets where relevant.

Also avoid aggressive following and ideally its best to keep your following numbers in balance with your followers.

Not exactly correct. In our case we get about 70% of those we follow who follow us back. It's all about interesting Tweets with occasional & careful use of # and an interesting profile.

Backlinks from social networking sites are extremely important fro driving relevant traffic to your site. e.g. a recommendation and link from a 10,000 follower Facebook page can work wonders.

How to get them? Provide a quality product or service and get people talking about you.

Yes, except to kick-start this snowball effect of followers, recommendations etc, people need to know about you in such mass, you'll need a ton of whatever in the first place.

Acceleration is the toughest thing..... and so few know how to get to that point eg: build the small snowball, so there is something to start the momentum

Same problem as above - again as with websites, WHY should anyone want to follow some off-line biz 20 page website. Other sites are followed bcos of the free aspect, eg: chasing of blog links, classifieds ads, directory links etc.

SO - you need an interesting offer, that catches the eye, and most websites aint got that! Shop window/product websites arent authorities, so no value there, and they dont have anything special to give away, nor enough links pointing to them to entice others to link. I mean how many off-line biz sites do you know with 20k of links - not many.

And probably the biggest nail is that businesses are so engaged in their day to day activities eg; making money, who has time to do the social stuff, the linkbuilding, searching the web for the golden websites etc. The average website is better off trying to exchange with other small businesses sites and get some links that way. But such sites are NOT traffic drivers, not authorities and linking with them wont set the world on fire.

I don't think that's entirely accurate...

I'm not too keen on Twitter followers as I don't see much traffic from those. Tweets yes if you tweet the right words at the right time.

Facebook however drives plenty of traffic if your site is suitable to that type of traffic. My example would be one of my football sites Facebook can drive 40% some days but my Gardening site none at all ever.
