Just been reading through all the posts on this thread in case anything startlingly original came up, but nothing much has, sadly. I earlier posted about 'web-rings' - a concept that is very old and which a former hotelier told me about, where he had local businesses refer and link to his hotel, in return for him having links to their services for the benefit of his guests. I called it 'reciprocal linking' and did it with our own wedding suppliers linking to us and us in turn linking to them (if they linked to us). Problem with this you are not really gaining useful links, and their value is probably diminished somewhat by the element of reciprocity. One little idea that is a bit different is getting charities to link to you in return for a charitable donation. We have a few dog charities we support with the offer of free B&B for the charity to raffle. If the B&B is worth £140 and they raffle it off, the charity makes some money and we get the link from the charity for the duration of the raffle. We also link to some charities that link to us, and interestingly on our dog friendly wales website I see on Google Analytics that some of these charity (re-homing) pages on my site get a few people staying on the page a long-ish time, so they are of interest to my own guests. I doubt we benefit hugely but you don't need to reciprocal link with this method, just come up with something you do that a charity can raffle or auction off, you get the link, they get the cash from the raffle sale of your product or service, while the cost to you (in our case an otherwise empty hotel room) does not need to be very much. Just thought I would mention this as a more 'original' method of generating links for a suitably niche website or service.
