how to find who made a website

how do you find out who made a website if there name isnt on the site itself?

thanks for any help!

Check the files as some leave a mark in the files, or by asking the website owner

Have a look at the whois information as well, you may well uncover a 'technical contact'.

that was my last resort, although i dont think they would tell me

If they are a direct competitor of yours maybe not but you could just play the "I really like your site, who did it" card and act dumb

Try searching the inbound links.

You may find the developer has linked to it from their portfolio.

Agree with all the above

- check html source for comments or author meta data
- check css files for author comments
- check inbound links to site from developers site
- check whois info for a) who registered domain, b) registrar, c) technical contact, d) nameservers
- trace other sites on the server, developer may have a vps or dedicated box
- google the site url, try with variations of "+ design" "+ development" etc
- email in secret

Go to domain.com/humans.txt sometimes developers will leave their calling card there.

Please note that this can be misleading as most company websites are build by professional design companies, who often leave their own data inside.
