How should I price advertisements on my website?

I’m close to starting a travel-based social media platform and have decided to use my own advertising service instead of something like Google Adsense. What would be a good way to price advertising, and how much would be ideal for me to charge for ad space on my website?

I’ve decided to put a space for advertisements on the sidebar, as well as occasionally in between posts.

Sidebar? Do they even exist anymore now that most browsing is done on a phone.

As a new site with very little traffic advertisers might pay 0.01p per impression. But probably won’t. This is because they don’t want to deal with you. They want to work with an established platform that places and manages their adverts.

if you mean Google or other advertisers, those place competitors ads onto your site.
He specifically said he didn’t want to work with advertising services.

This is very much how long is a piece of string, and I would recommend working with an agency who specialises in this else you will get almost no-where.

The easy option (which I've done because it's not important to me) is adding AdSense to your site, and then slowly blocking competitor adverts. You will make very little money unless you're in the 50k visitors a day or above level.

The other option is to work with an agency, but they do tend to only work with sites who have more than 100k visitors a day, some only if traffic is over 1M a day.

Trying to earn any income from site traffic is long dead, I'm afraid to say, unless you're in a very (very) niche market with good quality and very detailed stats on your visitors and can prove they are a buying audience.

Why would advertisers choose to advertise on your platform rather than Google which has a huge global brand presence and invests millions to drive traffic to its platforms

If I were you, I would start with a combination of Google AdSense and your own free advertising system, like:
    • Google AdSense: Place ads in the sidebar or at the bottom of the screen for smartphones.
    • Own ad system: Display ads between posts.

You first need to increase traffic to your site so that brands will want to advertise their products. Even if the ad fees are low, people won’t pay if your site doesn’t generate traffic.

Offer free advertising opportunities while earning some revenue from Google AdSense, and switch to paid ads once your traffic grows. You can remove Google AdSense when your own ad system generates more profit than Google Ads.

You will make very little money
    God bless you Ozzy

as a prospective advertiser this is what I like to read
As a new site with very little traffic advertisers might pay 0.01p per impression.
    like fisicx says

but if publisher and advertiser don't particularly trust each other, one wonders how they will count the impressions

and many of these impressions will be just Chinese search engines as we know

they are checking that the page still exists

as for choosing between sidebar and 'bottom of the page', you can use flex-wrap if you don't mind delving into the css

An alternative to selling advertising is to use affiliate programmes to generate income. You embed a link in your site to a site where someone might spend money (eg Amazon) and you get a commission on sales. It's still pretty hard to make any decent money but you can get started very easily.

First of all, no advertiser will care about your website without a significant number of visitors. And first of all, give your audience ad-free moments that will make the user happy instead of page structures with lots of ads. It seemed pointless to me that you were thinking about ads at first, even though you are so new.
