How often should businesses review their card machine and merchant service setup?

We work with businesses that want to review their card machines, merchant services, and payment systems, and one thing we hear a lot is how difficult it can be to compare providers properly without getting pulled into a single sales process. Our approach has been to compare options across a panel of providers so businesses can look at cost, service, and suitability in one place rather than having to shop around themselves. The service is free and there is no obligation, which tends to make the conversation easier for business owners who simply want to check whether their current setup is still competitive. I would be interested to hear how other businesses here have approached reviewing their payment setup and whether you found switching worthwhile or more hassle than it was worth.

Switching payment providers is genuinely worth reviewing every couple of years because the market moves fast and the rates and terms you locked in at the start can become pretty uncompetitive without you realising it, and the hassle factor of switching tends to be overstated by existing providers who have an obvious interest in making you feel like it's more complicated than it actually is.
