How influential is social media in SEO?

Would be interested to hear the experts opinions here.

Have been hearing a lot lately that social media is getting very important for SEO and beginning to out-punch traditional search criteria.

Any thoughts?

Hi Peter.

My experience is that is depends on the niche.

In niches where customers are heavily engaged in social media, social media is likely to have a bigger weighting on SEO and it is in these niches where social campaigns make the most sense.

If your audience doesn't do much engaging in social media then a good campaign may have a small impact, but you could probably spend your time better elsewhere.

I always say, do stuff that gets you the most (quality) traffic and rankings will probably follow.

Its becoming common knowledge that Social Shares is becoming the New SEO. The trick is to curate quality content and syndicate that content on the social networks where your prospect, customers and clients convene the most and sharing your articles, videos, infographics et al in a way that entices engagement and motivates the person to take the desired action as a matter of course.

Imagine that you are a small business selling B2C. You have a decent website and run PPC. You have a few 'how to' you tube videos and a facbook page, contrbute regulary to trade blogs and forums, offer sposorship to local charity sites, take part in discussions and generally have a good internet profile.

And now consider the company that twitters incessantly, posts constantly on facebook about their new products, self promotes endelessly on blogs, has profiles on hundreds of bookmarking sites and generally is a complete pain.

Which one do you think google is going to give credit too?

SM is not new. It's been around since the days of the newsgroups. Those who use it sensibly will benefit. Those who use it as an SEO promotion are more likley to lose out. Google is all about adding value. If you add value through your content, navigation and internet profile then you will be OK.

The logic behind is that the more people speak about a website the more authoritive that website.
That is false logic.

It's not the number of people who speak - it's more important to get the right people to say the right things.

Just like link building.

I recently completed a site for a new local business, it took around 4 days for Google to list it.

The site was on page 5 of Google for the chosen key phrase. I suggested to the client that if she shared a link to the site on Facebook it should help boost the ranking. She duly did this and within 2 hours the site was on the first page of Google, but only ranked #4 on the first page initially.

That's one example.

Well Google takes Social Media a lot more into account these days than ever before, but it is just one of around 200 variables they include when ranking your site. All the old techniques still actually work, bold, italics, reciprocal linking, etc, but you get 1/200th of a point at most for them, when just a few years ago you would have got quite a bit more. Google constantly waters down certain SEO types as they get abused by marketers. So basically cover all bases :)

Social media is always a welcome addition to all your online promotion strategies..But how much you intensify your social media optimization depends on what kind of business you have in hand..You may or may not need to go very extensive with social media in certain cases..
