A good logo can help with branding but too many people agonise over the details when they don't really matter.

Many people will recall the general shape of a logo but ask them about the details and it all get a bit hazy.

Just like these people:

https://www.vanmonster.com/en-gb/motoring-logos-from-memory

Summary: the simpler the logo, the better the recollection.

If you feel you really must have a logo, keep it simple.

Agree simple is best - but do think they are quite important if you are a very large company - especially a retail/consumer company as a customer being able to recognise your logo easily amongst others is a good way to keep the brand in someones sub concious. Enjoyed looking at peoples attempts on there...son't think I would have got much of the Alfa one right.

Absolutely. Nothing wrong with having a logo, people will recognise them (most of the time) but it’s the general shape they recognise not the detail.

It’s all to do with how the brain stores data.

Agreed with you. Simple logo is good for recollection.

I would say logo must go with your business tagline and if you are offering something creative or unique then your logo should compliment that as well.

A logo is the critical element from branding point of view. A logo is an important part of your company's brand, and makes a significant impact on a company's public perception.

True. However, the problem is that way too many people don't want to invest in their branding, and instead choose to go, grab a "roof" icon from a free site, put a name next to it, and there you go, they have a logo. And then you wonder why all the roofers/builders logos all look the same.

Yes, all big brands like Nike, Audi, etc.. their logos are very simple. However, you don't see, Audi, BMW, Kia, they are all car manufactures, but you don't see them have a car icon in their logo + their name.

Symbols are a succinct and efficient way of communicating information about your business. A logo is an important part of your company's brand, and makes a significant impact on a company's public perception. In fact, a logo is one of the most important branding investments a business can make.

No it's not. The bloke who came an fixed my fence last week doesn't have a logo. The butcher I get my sausages from doesn't have a logo. My business doesn't have a logo and I do alright.
The logo is the emblem and the identity of your business and every business whether small or big should have a logo to advertise.
Do a google search. No logos in the results page or in the adwords list. Same with the GMB three pack.

No logo, is better than one of those generic free logo's like everyone else!

My friend takes time to finalize the logo for his business, it is because this is a unique representation of your business regardless of how small or big your business are.
Then your friend is foolish. They should be focusing on the business not fripperies.

From what my uncle told me, memory is like a footprint in the sand. Its the shape rather than the details that we remember. Although not that important, in a busy sector I think a simple logo can help you stand out or at least help in being identified if you have a good rep. So many logos suck though. I made mine myself. When I drive my van, people that know me wave, when I took it off, people ignored me, but when I replaced it and even in a diff colour, people still recognised it was me.

A logo is a crucial part of the branding because it becomes the face of the company. It is important to have a logo that resonates with the targeted audience and is in sync with the overall branding of the website and business.

It makes your brand stand apart from the competitor and acts as a virtual stamp that is associated with only your brand and name. For this reason, a logo should be eye-catching, relatable, and unique enough to be remembered.

If this is case all those car logos fail.

And a logo is not crucial to a business.

Yes, but it's not something to spend a lot of time over. Especially if you are just starting out.

The words "Bob Smith - Bromsgrove Builder" is sufficient for the website, van and business card.
"Doris the Dog Sitter" only really needs a picture of a dog (or of Doris).
You don't have one on UKSBD and it all looks OK to me.

Pub quiz a few months ago had a sheet of car logos to guess the name. Several teams got all 20 correct.
Did you look at the link in the first post?

If shown a logo I can often name the brand. But as the link showed, people can't remember the details from memory. This was the point of the thread: if you must have a logo, keep it simple.

As an aside, run some tests. Remove the logo from your site and monitor. It won't make the slightest difference to your business.

It makes a significant difference, should you have the WRONG logo!

I was pointing out that you have faulty logic over this. Shown a logo and people will remember the brand. Your link was the reverse of that.

As it happens I never used a traditional logo but I did use distinct fonts and colours in a consistent way.

Remembering what the brand is from the logo is one thing....but say Alfa Romeo had a circle with an A in it and they always had that then people would remember that instead.

That does not show the logo is important just that people can remember them. Does not matter what the logo actually is.

I think the article is insightful, although I genuinely don't think there is a one-size-fits all answer to how important your logo is.

Let's say that you have an Influencer led fashion brand, there is no question your logo, and your branding becomes infinitely more important. You can't really have the consistency of your brand's message unless you have defined brand, and logo is key to that. try creating an unboxing experience for example without good branding.

On the flip, if you have a website reselling a particular product, which is price-led, your own brand suddenly becomes less important.

I think some people, when starting up their business don't quite understand the differences in 'logo' and 'brand', and put far too much emphasis on creating the perfect logo, believing that it will also define the perfect brand.

Look at many big brands, their logos have often developed over the years to become instantly recognizable. But ask someone to describe the details and many will struggle (as that article demonstrated).

It's also worth nothing that someone searching online will be using a keywords not a logo. It's the name that matters - the logo is more an indicator that you have reached the right place.

I was looking at a website this morning and they had a 'as used by' section where they showed a whole bunch of logos. I had no idea what half of them were.

Nothing wrong with having a logo. Just keep it simple.

You don't need a logo, you need customers.

Any business can survive without a logo, but you won't get far without customers.

Of course, it's 2020 and brand awareness is all over the web, so if you really need a logo, then go to Fiverr and get one done for less than your daily compulsory cappuccino.
