How do I improve Google rankings?

Thanks Tin, I've only started doing websites again recently. I think the main keywords would be probably 'retail packaging', 'packaging uk', 'thermoformed packaing', 'clamshell packaging'.

Sorry for the confusion.

Is my other advice in-line with reality? Do you think I could do more to optimise the content? We want to add an FAQ to the gardner website for a little tiny amount of additional content and Macpac needs further content adjustments.

Sitemaps and backlinks from relevant directories can be ignored.

Great content, internal linking and crafted pages titles is more important than all your other suggestions which are fine but not the priority.

It's also worth spending a lot of time identifying your target client, they things they are looking for and then properly planning your site structure .

I'd say the following is important:

1) Contents (SEO words)
2) Good site structure (not just one landing page)
3) Links from social media (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, ...).
4) Mobile-friendly
5) Retila-display friendly (Yes, high-resolution devices are getting popular everywhere).

Ok I can offically say don't waste too much of your time on social networks for SEO. Now before all those who rely on SEO for their income throw custard (and other things at me) let me tell you that I've been testing for 3 years. I have loads of facebook, twitter, google+ etc etc accounts and loads of websites. I've got tweets hitting as many as 10,000 followers, many include urls and virtually all the followers are active real people interested in the tweets. How do I know that? I get 100s of RT and Likes per week and I weed out spam accounts now and then. The upshot of all this is the ranking on the sites these accounts service has not had any noticiable benifit.

On the other hand it does bring traffic, some sites it makes up 20-30% and more at odds times. But this is purely down to the highly targetted nature of the followers, friends etc.

Thats my 2p on that, so what can you do ? well it's content content and more content. Backlinks are gold (follow or nofollow) if natural and not exchange links. And don't discount outgoing links. I think the key to real success is making your site look as if it's the fountain of knowlade for your topic. Giving visitors information that fulfills their search critera. The trick is doing that in a way that doesn't take them away from your products or service.

There you go, not selling anything and I don't sell my services in this area but I have been doing it longer then Google ;-)
