How did this happen?

Can anybody explain to me how the site "lisas jewels" got to number one for "Handmade Jewellery"....cuz I've no idea!

It's bugging me now and I can't see why it's there! Put me out of my missery!

whether they are at the top or not, they definitely haven't mastered ecommerce:


1. when i click "online shop" all I get is a page full of information on how to add to cart - as if I am stupid? Why are there no products on that page? forcing me to revert back to the navigation to find an item I want - at least 4 clicks to get me to the first product listing.
2. The site doesn't look that great
3. The twirling navigation is distracting

Because, from what I can see, no one is doing any better. Competition is only as hard as the other sites make it. Pretty much every website on the front-page as only a few hundred back-links and the majority of them are probably useless.

Anyone with a decent knowledge of SEO, a well optimised site and a few back-links will probably out-rank all of those sites fairly easily within a few months.

It's a mr site so the code will be awful but .. I'd say one main element would be domain age.
(and, yes, the competition is hardly ground breaking)

In my opinion lisasjewels has more relevent links and more links from hubs than any of the other sites on that front page.

There are other sites on that front page that have more inbound links but most of those links aren't relevant and the sites that do have more links suffer slightly due to domain name relevancy.

Like farfallina - nearly 1000 links but their name doesn't contain any keywords related to "Handmade Jewellery" and they don't have that many relevant links and minimal hub links compared to some of the other sites.

I haven't looked at on page factors.

• Title tag
• Relevant inbound links

This is helped by lack of any competition, with strong on page and off page SEO.

I have it as a PR2, it has had a little onpage seo (this could definatly be improved) but someone has done a link pop job on it, although they have missed a key ingredient (although this may be intentional if part of an ongoing campaign). They have worked to get it up there, the link building is more targeted than the competition.

I agree with the others, you could beat it, although it may take some time with a new domain if you haven't already got started on your link building (or have started but done it incorrectly).

However, I doubt the conversion rate is good on the site with the current setup, if she has put all that effort into getting found it is a shame she isn't making the best of it and turning more of that traffic into customers.

Apart from what others have said (the competitions isnt much better) you can see they have "site links" in there google listing ie links to some of there other pages, this shows google like them at least more than others,

also just because yahoo site explorer shows less than 200 links doesnt mean they have less than 200 links, it can take 3 months for links to show up and sometimes longer in those tools and other tools but just because links do not show up doesnt mean they are not counted.

If they have recently been building links for this term you can garuantee they have more than the 150 ish they are showing.

Couple of reasons really:

- They have 181 backlinks all with the anchor text "Lisa's Handmade Jewellery"

- Keyword density of the page is:

- "Handmade Jewellery" = 0.79% - Not great but came in 3rd highest on the page so pretty good.

The page itself is average yet pretty good compared to the competition.

BTW the keyword only gets 2900 exacts per month. Id say Lisa's Handmade Jewellery gets 50% of the traffic making it about 50 hits a day. Keep in mind a conversion rate of 2-3% and its not exactly earth shattering.

Try another keyword maybe... or go for the long tail and bulk your website out a bit?

What evidence do you have to back up this ludicrous claim?

But as suggested, the site has been around a while and content obviously ticks all the Google boxes (hence the site links) and there only needs to be one good inbound links to push it up to the top spot.

And of course the words 'handmade jewellery' appear in every page title which is a big help.

When you compare to everyone else on page one then you can see that most website are over dosed with images as opposed to text. she also has a good internal linking structure in place. Google likes it because it has also added 4 links to the results
