How can I find the actual manufacturer?

I've been trawling the net for ages, trying to pinpoint the factories that produce a particular product and whilst I can find multiple overseas suppliers in Pakistan, India, China etc., they all look like agents rather than actual manufacturers.

I'm aware of Ali Baba etc., but are there any websites out there that can reliably identify the companies I want to speak to?

Get an experienced agent that speaks native English and fully understands your requirements, to source the product you want, including a supplier evaluation, sampling and approval, ordering process, quality control, packing & packaging and shipping to your door.

Typically, a good agent will contact 20+ suppliers, shortlist to 6, and sample with 3, before deciding the best factory to work with, taking into consideration pricing, quality, communication, warranty, payment terms and history making the product you want.

If you need any assistance, feel free to send me a DM.

Edit: Over half of sellers on Alibaba are NOT manufacturers!

No they aren’t. Once you eliminate all the frausters, liars and scammers all that is left is a handful of agents.

Which one of these is you?

I've worked with a supplier who organises container loads of various types of goods from China to the UK. He acts as an agent, and whilst based in the UK, has a team in China who source, quality check and ensure cargo is delivered to door in the UK. The contact name is Paz, and his company is APM Sourcing (I can't share website or e-mail). They are trustworthy and reliable.

I think at this stage my requirements will be beyond the interest of an agent any my budget?

Realistically I'm looking at a product that retails for £70-£120, that I'd need to be buying at an appropriate price and with an initial order of 100, less if possible.

I want to take on an established UK manufacturer who refuses to supply us for fear of upsetting their dominance. We have the potential to do that, although assurances that this isn't our aim, fall on deaf ears.

Be wary of trading companies. It is not uncommon for them to switch factories without telling you, or to down-spec your product to make a better margin. I've been buying from China for 15 years and always from factories rather than traders.

Also, be very careful about which factory you choose. Plenty of them feed the Chinese market and the quality is generally terrible. You want a good one that is used to supplying the West.

I used to do it all myself but now find it easier to use someone with boots on the ground over there. They can find the right kind of factory for what you are looking for. They will organise factory inspections, check licenses, etc. I also recommend pre-shipment inspections. Set a standard for your product and make sure that what is being produced meets that standard. If not, the inspection will reject the shipment and the factory will have to re-work it. Then another inspection, and so on.
