hi all, ecommerce has been just god awful lately, really struggling with the latest penguin update from google, previously well ranked (whitehat) ecommerce website, decent product base, long established presence online, decent prices, shipping uk & eu wide. seo is good, no spaming techniques used, using adwords & bing. anything else we can do? (we do social, twitter, google +, videos of products)

any advice would be great ;-) thanks in advance....

Is it all your ranking that has dropped or just some of the keywords?

Maybe you could focus on improving conversions from those visitors you do get.

And are you 100% sure everything you have done is is whitehat? Link building is by definition a bit dodgy as it is an attempt to artificially boost ranking rather than letting links form naturally.

One of my SEO clients suffered massive penalities with the penguin updates (prior to me taking over ;-)), because they had duplicate meta data (page titles, meta description) across most pages of their site(s). If you are signed up to Google Webmaster tools this will alert you of any problems you need to iron out with SEO.

Also are you continuing to do both onpage SEO and link building? It's vital you do so if you're not already.

The Penguin update is concerned with a site's incoming link profile, it has nothing to do with on-page content or meta data.

If you search for 'panda updates duplicate content' and 'matt cutts duplicate content' (for an official source) you'll find that the Panda updates have quite a lot to do with wiping out crappy content i.e. duplicate content.

I would seriously advise anyone to clear up issues that Google itself can see is wrong with your website, ie. use Webmaster Tools. If you focus just on one part of SEO, e.g. link building, then you're missing half the equation.

This thread is about Penguin, not Panda. They are two completely different things/mammals.

The recent Google update was Penguin and concerns link building only.
