How Annoying is the Easyjet Ad

I use FF & Adblock+ on my main browsing screen, and nip onto IE for the mundane testing, etc on my other screen.

I don't see the ads unless I accidentally use the wrong one for a nip onto the forum.

I have no real problem with the ads, though I only see them very infrequently, as everyone has to make a living and Sift are no different.

I wonder how many of us would pay the dosh they did for this forum, and put effort into developing it further, and leave it ad-free?

I have had no problem with the ads, even the vodafone one that everyone got steamed up about, the the pop out ones are simply infuriating.

I didn't block the ads til now because, your right, sift are a money making company, and need to monetarise the forum. And that's just business, and I'm not going to get steamed up about it. I have adverts on my own website.

But something that leaps out and takes up half the screen, that's really a case of throwing the baby out with the bathwater. I hope that easyjet paid well for that advert because it means that i'm rarely going to see any other adverts on the forum now.

No offence to anyone.

But I have read a few times about Sift paying a lotta money for this forum and needing to monetise it.

Are we not business people, does anyone give a monkeys if someone can't turn a profit building computers, doing web design, selling clothes or doing loft conversions, etc??

Not in business for sympathy!!

Whether a profit is made is of no concern to anyone other than Sift.

The argument Sift paid a lotta money for this forum and therefore the implication they can teat us however they choose, is surprising!!

went to view on my computer rather than laptop and couldnt login for ages.
just left - i get the feeling that if more of these things appear that cover the information your trying to read i'll be away.

i'm not a paid up member but christ i'm still annoyed!

i'm not sure people would be so happy if i started covering all the rehearsal rooms in banners you couldnt get through the door for 30 minutes

ads are needed i understand, but do them wisely! it comes up every time and the ads are just more stupid each time.

Just seen what everybody has been on about for the first time.

I wasn't logged in but I have to say had a come across this forum for the first time and that [double!] advert popped up that would have been the first and last time I used this forum.

It sends COMPLETELY THE WRONG MESSAGE FOR UKBF IMHO.

the fact that theres been no-one from UKBF on this thread apart from the guy at the start is a bad sign, they cant even be bothered to comment
Steve Roth responded in this thread, and there have been discussions behind the scenes (indeed, I raised the issue before you even started this thread). Please don't feel that no one is bothered. As for what can be done about it, I'm sure Sift are considering what to do.

It's great that they are trying to sort this behind the scenes, but what actually was said at the meeting to Ok the adverts, especially when the vodafone ad was moaned about recently.

    Perhaps....

Sift 1: "what can we do to make more lolly?"
Sift 2: "I know have 2 bloody great big annoying adverts filling the screen so the user cannot click buttons or write posts!"
Sift 1: "Great idea! Lets do it!"

if the ad has been paid for maybe they are in a dimema what to do. 'Here you go easyjet, your ad is disrupting our forum big time so here's your money back' would be a tad embarrassing. You would have thought they would have agreed a trial 7 days with them based on how such an advert affected the forum.

Doesn't work for me I'm afraid. A company the size and stature of Easy Jet would have all corporate marketing tested, signed off and evaluated in full before it even went anywhere near a company like SIFT. In my opinion, the campaign is premeditated so that it really is in your face.

Just appears to be backfiring on them.

This was a trial and it is unlikely we will use this format in this combination again. We have previously turned away revenue because the ads were too intrusive. However, as all of you in business will appreciate, the market demands that we continue to talk to clients and trial new formats to meet their needs without degrading the user experience. In this case it was not a good one.

For ther remainder of this trial we have capped the number of times a visitor will see the ad in any one session to two, and we have replaced the version that opens unprompted with a version that you have to roll over to initiate. You will also see only the sky or the banner - not both.

    Thanks for all the feedback.

The problem i found most annoying is that im a fast mouse user so by the time i closed one it then did not close quickly enough and then i pressed it again but then the banner had disappeared and i was clicking the other ad down the side.
    The damm thing.
Not too worry though because i have now also installed ADBLOCK:)

This little experiement it seems will have actually done more harm than good.

Thanks for the update Steve. Do you not trial such ads within user groups before publication though? Or at least around Sift towers?

It is difficult to trial ad formats any other way as a smallgroup can give quite different results to the main audience. For example, we AB test bulletins for open rates and click throughs. Unfortunately, when we send the real bulletin, the response can be quite different. This is why feedback from the full community is so valuable.

The thanks buttons are images, maybe you have just blocked images from this site and not the other forums you frequent.

When I first downloaded adblocker I could see my thanks buttons, but then I blocked images also and they were gone!

Thanks for the update, but i dont think people really bother or care who the adverts are from as i personally don't look at them let alone click on them. Aslong as they are in the side then i don't care, its when they cover the forums and information your reading.

If it was like "Britains Best Entrepreneur" one and stayed on the side it would be fine.

We all need income and places to put the adverts, but with Easyjet one it seems a bit like covering your shop front so it cant be seen with an advert.

If you install NoScript as well as AdBlockPlus to Firefox, then you can just see the text you want to read here and absolutely nothing else.

NoScript by default will block all manner of cr*p, including google analytics, 3rd party ad sites, so you will find pages load a lot faster as a bonus, as the source is blocked rather than just not displaying the content after download.

Downside is that you will have to specifically enable scripts on sites you visit, but it will be an eyeopener into just how your browsing is being manipulated.
