Hi all

Any idea on the cost of hosting a website for two years. To put in to context I obviously have a website and chap who hosts it at present has quoted me £350 for two years.

Reasonable?? I only ask because I contacted him last month and asked for some additional email addresses to be created and he charged me £90. When I've done this via our other websites it's taken me about 5 minutes but obviously this may be more technical.

All/any advice??

Hi Sarah,
It depends on what kind of website you have. Our Windows shared hosting prices for 2 years range from £75.99 for a single WordPress site to £284.99 for hosting upto 10 domains.
It also depends if your website runs from a database and the type of database. A MySQL database is cheaper than a MSSQL database. If you have a very large MSSQL database this could cost a bit.
If you have access to your websites hosting control panel then you are correct ragrding adding email addresses, it is a few minutes job.
Let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Way too much. You can set up additional email address for free through your control panel. Hosting shouldn't be anywhere near that much for a simple wordpress site unless you have a VPS or some other funky server service.

As a guide, I charge £60/year. Cheap shared hosting you can get for £2.99/month (but I wouldn't recommend this)

Hi Sarah,

It looks like you have a straightforward wordpress site, which means you need Linux hosting. This will likely cost you around £30 a year. I would suggest you ask friends and family who they use as a hosting company, also read reviews on a few hosting companies and most importantly, send them a test support email and see how fast they reply etc.

Let me know if you have any more queries.

Regards,

Jacob

Umm @jacobc, your statement that you "need" Linux hosting is totally untrue. Wordpress will work perfectly well on Windows hosting, it even comes with a web.config just for use with Windows hosting. In any case to the OP yes you are paying way to much, if you are happy to learn to use a hosting control panel then adding a new email address is very simple and only a few clicks of a mouse. £90 for adding a few email address is pretty steep but remember anything where a physical person has to do the job is going to have a minimum charge however I suspect most hosts would happily do this type of thing for free as long as it is not a daily occurrence.. :)

Can you share the amount of resources assigned for your hosting package for this package? as for this cost I sure you can even get a VPS.

Would that be Scott? (1) If it is, you don't own the domain. That could be bad news if you want to move web hosting to someone else, as he may not let you. My opinion is you are paying way, way over the odds for hosting.

    (1) Don't know who he is, just going by the whois lookup.

It is with Heart at the moment, on shared hosting, (your own server at Heart would be £960 for two years, so probably not that). The Business pro pack at Heart would be £312 for two years (Home pro £172), so £312 + 12.5% to look after it/you is £351. Not that bad, if you really want to use Heart.

IMHO £90 to do a few emails is a "I don't want to do this, and you can easily do it yourself" price.
Nothing totally outrageous there or with the £350. The domain owner might be happy to give you the domains and you could set up on one of the above poster's offers or somewhere like Vidahost; all cheaper.

    Hi Sarah,

I'm assuming he designed your website for you?

Unfortunately some developers do massively overcharge for standard web hosting reseller packages they may use, or even normal shared hosting.

You should have access to your own control panel to be able to add email accounts. Heart Internet's control panel is propriety and isn't great, but adding another email account is still only a few second job. £90 is definitely too much for that. You can argue he can charge what he likes if you don't want to do it yourself, but if you're not getting the option to do it yourself that's out of order in my opinion.

It's hard to tell what resources are currently available to you, but you can probably get the same hosting for far less from Heart Internet direct. However they're certainly not the best option.

A decent smaller host would happily create the email accounts for you at no extra charge. Heart Internet used to be popular with web designers but their standards have really dropped in recent years and they're now little better than many of the large oversold web hosts.

Unless you have specific requirements Linux hosting will generally be more cost effective, and although as stated earlier Wordpress can run perfectly fine on Windows, Linux is generally the preferred option, as it is with any open source content management system.

To put his quote into perspective our Starter web hosting package is £3 per month or £30 per year and will allow you to run your Wordpress site with ample resources, a free domain for life, and unlimited email accounts. As we run LiteSpeed webserver and don't overcrowd our servers you'd likely see higher performance from this. Alternatively our Startup eCommerce hosting package is £10 per month or £100 per year and includes a free domain name for life, SSL certificate, and dedicated IP address, and is optimised to run modern CMSs such as Wordpress and eCommerce platforms.

For two years we offer an additional month free, so it'd only be £190. And without knowing specifically what package you have at the moment, that would likely provide a lot more than what you're currently getting.

So I'd say you're being charged quite a premium for what you're getting, especially if you're not even being given control panel access, in which case what you're getting is worse than if you went direct.

Generally it's going to be far cheaper to go direct to a good web hosting company.

You should also make sure the domain is registered in your name and is under your full control.

Anyway I hope that helps. If you have any questions feel free to get in touch.

    Good luck,

    Dan
