Hi everyone I'm stuck. Does Anyone have any ideas of a good business to run from home? I would really like to do something that would fit around school hours as I am free during the most part of the day. I already have a small business as a freelance administrator but I only earn £60-£100 per week doing this. I thought about starting a cup cake business and selling via the internet but need to look into it more. Im really looking for fresh new ideas with small outlay. Any help would be greatfully recieved.

Have a look at dropshipping, which requires minimal outlay to get going. However, you need to invest your time in marketing the website, link building, blog, twitter etc.

Don't go for the white goods and gaming products as these groups tend to be very competitive, hence the margins are low, and marketing costs high. Possibly look at niche products such as garden sheds, trailers, furniture etc.
You must be prepared to answer customer queries, delivery problems etc, so if you can't stand the hassle, don't do it.

Alternatively, invest more time in marketing your existing skills.

My experience is that if you try to set up more than one activity at a time then your effort and rewards are diluted.

What is wrong with getting more business as a freelance administrator?

That is one way of looking at it. however, I feel I would like to try something different too. Maybe a different direction would make more money for me then I can decide which one to put more effort into if that makes sense. I don't want to be an administrator forever because there is more to life

Does it have to be home based?

There's always dog walking, house cleaning, home help, window washing, ironing, gardening....

The problem with any internet based enterprise is that it's not easy. You have to actually put more effort into making it successful that you would setting up an offline business.

As a rough guide, allow a year to get the site up and running and working effectively, a year to build up custom and another yrar to start making a profit.

Of course you can set things up on a shoestring but it's only going to bring in a pittance, certainly not enough to make it profitable. There are always some who make money from the off but most don't.

You would be better off selling cakes at the local market than you would doing it online.

Do you enjoy the freelance business? If so, think about how you can earn £10K + per year instead of around £4K per year. If you enjoy it you'll enquire about how you can gain more customers, how you can market your business effectively, look at what you're lacking etc and you'll be able to stick at it and make it work for you. It is best to focus on one thing at a time to make it successful.

Thank you 9ice for your offer. However, I don't have any sales experience to be honest.

Do you have experience of listening to, rather than talking to, people? Are you what your friends, family, colleagues...etc..would call a "people person"?

That's the base level for a good sales person, that is...

What about a different idea? Utility Warehouse for example? you have kids, so see the other mums at drop off, pick up time... you have friends and family and other associates... you have a potential market there...

Note - I don't do UW, but it IS an option... other home based businsses like Kleeneze for example, are out there...

Don't take this as a character assassination, but are you broad-minded???

Have you considered being a chat line operator?

No, I'm not trying to recruit you, and I don't know anyone in 'the business', but it's far more common than you'd think, and it suits your free time pretty well. Most of the operations will install a dedicated line to your home and will only route calls to you during the time you're free.

If it's morally repugnant to you, then feel free to ignore my post. Just a bit of 'blue-sky' thinking going on...

I was going to suggest leaflet/catalogue/directory distribution but it sounds like your preference is setting-up a business and working for yourself?

One suggestion is offering website traffic and advertising space. Their are many large forums that cater for webmasters and many are looking for these type of services. In effect, you will be acting as a broker and buying and selling ad space etc.

This can be quite profitable and your set-up costs are virtually zero (mainly your time required).

What a fantastic idea! I could multi-task this whilst bookkeeping! I'm gonna look up how to apply right now!
