help with my new design business? (:

Hello Im a new young web designer and I have set up a new web business 'Steve's Web Design'. I am really not sure how to go about getting people onto my website and interested in my service.

You can look at my website if you want: (steveswebdesign.co.uk) just to show the quality of work i can produce :). Any help to getting customers will be greatly appreciated as I have never started a business before.

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

I quickly checked out your site and the portfolio only has logos on display - no websites. This is a bit of an issue for customers as you are effectively proclaiming you haven't built any other than your own.

The logos portfolio has 9 logos on there most of them are formatted block/icon on left and name on right. When I look at the page I see 9 very similar logos which makes me wonder if you are creative or just stuck on your own preferred style of logo?

If I were you I would have some contrast of logos to highlight creativity and I would add some demo sites if I didn't have any real client sites to display.

Hope this helps

David

Site looks like a template and as 3cell says you don't appear to have built any websites.

In any case who are you? There is not namem address, email or telephone number.

Are the logos on the site all real? Are they used on websites or stationary? If so you need to tell your visitors and give examples.

AS to getting more visitors/work you need to market your services. That means selling yourself locally or paying for adverts online. You are just one of many thousands all hoping to get a very thin slice of the pie.

Get a few hobby sites built sop people can see your work, set up and theme a blog, do a site for the local bands and so on to fill up your portfolio.

What sort of client are you looking for?

In my opinion "Steves Web Design" makes you sound like someones mate from the pub which is fine but I think you will only ever attract the low end of the market with this image. Having said that, if that's what you are looking for then you have positioned yourself well.

I would have a good think about who YOU want as a client and then keep this in mind when making decisions about your business (where to network, where to advertise, what to say on your website etc..) and you will get clients.

It's not easy though. Web design is very saturated!

It's not too bad, you could just do with some more website examples up there if that is what you are specialising in. As NuBlue said it is a saturated industry (and one I work in myself!)

You need to get your marketing head on - any way that you can advertise your site / business then do it, it doesn't have to be expensive. Use the free services like twitter, facebook etc etc to your advantage.

Good luck!
