Simple answer - to ensure you're at page 1 all the time, just ensure that your max CPC is high ! BUT...

Not sure there's anything such thing as the 'ideal' settings as it very much depends on your business.

You need to set up your keywords (try Google's KW tool and if you're new to Adwords, I would prob suggest avoiding broad match) with your max CPC. You can set it up so that your ad only shows for positions 1-10.

As much as you can, ensure that you aim for max relevancy, so splitting ad campaigns into relevant ad groups, etc.

Once it's set up, I would monitor it closely so that you can make adjustments to your ad campaigns. There's now a bid simulator in the admin (not sure if it's exactly called a bid simulator, but you click on it and can see how many impressions you could get depending on the bid you make).

Rather than going into this blindly (as you can just burn cash if doing it incorrectly), I would definitely do a bit of reading to make sure you're confident that you know what you are doing.

I want my website to appear on Page 1 of Google non stop for the phrase "picture frames" till my balance runs out. Any idea what settings this requires?

Thanks.

Errm... with respect thats a very bad plan.

What you want to to is get the biggest return for your spend, so that you have more to spend next month... If you are good enough and make enough money, then you can try to hog the best slots.

The top slots are not necessarily the ones that make the most money. In fact, a lot of people actualy go for the 3rd or 4th as they get fewer "casual clicks" and are cheaper... so better conversion rate for less money.

To keep the costs down make sure that the page you are pointing the advertisement to is optimised for that keyword. Otherwise Google will count it as irrelevant and will put the price up and eventually stop displaying the ads due to low quality score. Additionally add negative keywords to avaid paying for irrelevant visits.
